This posting represents a multi-level posting. If this position is not filled by qualified applicants at the Transportation Generalist Senior Level, the position will be filled at the Transportation Generalist level.
This position exists to serve as a member of a field survey crew, performing location, construction and land surveys . The individual performs both manual labor and technical work as required to accomplish assigned survey tasks. The individual must also assist the survey crew chief in training and running the crew. This position’s responsibilities are 85% surveys & 15% snow and ice removal at an assigned truck station.
Job Duties: Examples of work for this specific vacancy include but are not limited to:
Performs as survey lead worker in absence of the crew lead.
Sets up real time kinematic global position systems or total station.
Performs data comparison from real time kinematic global position systems or total station.
Assists survey lead in construction survey office activities.
Performs set-up, calibration, use and maintenance of survey equipment.
Assists survey lead in field construction by creating and/or checking survey notes, recovering or establishing horizontal and vertical control, setting and marking stakes, and pounding hubs or setting right of way.
Sets up and operates global positioning systems.
Assists with investigation and location of lot corners, monuments and section corners.
Performs snow & ice activities such as maintaining roadways and preparing & inspecting winter equipment.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
License: Must possess or have the ability to obtain a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with no Air Brake restriction within 6 months of initial placement into the position, permit within 3 months.
The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist Senior level can be achieved with:
- Two years performing surveys (e.g., land, location, construction, and/or geodetic control surveys, etc.), mapping or related activities.
OR
One year of experience performing survey (e.g., land, location, construction, and/or geodetic control surveys,
Note:A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four-year degrees:Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).
Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
If positions are not filled at the Transportation Generalist Senior level, they will be filled at the Transportation Generalist level by utilizing the following minimum qualifications.
The level of experience to perform this job at the Transportation Generalist level can be achieved with:
- Six months of experience performing survey (e.g., land, location, and construction surveys, etc.), mapping, geodetic or related activities and a combination of six months experience in road maintenance, construction, materials/soils, permits, etc.
OR
Note:A Two year Civil or Construction Technology Degree or the following four year degrees:Architectural, Civil or Mechanical Engineering; Land Surveying / Geomatics; or equivalent may substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).
Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
Physical Requirements
Pre-Employment Physical Exam: A pre-placement physical examination is required for this position. Current employees who have successfully bid or are moving into specific job classifications may be required to complete the pre-employment physical exam. The scope of the physical exam will be limited to whether the employee can safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, in compliance with state and federal law.
Additional Requirements
NOTE: The incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Individuals not currently in the random testing pool must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP), amphetamines and semi-synthetic opioids (i.e., hydrocodone, oxycodone, hydromorphone, oxymorphone).
The incumbent is required to be immediately accessible to a phone and be able to report to work within one (1) hour of being called.

This position is contingent upon the selected job candidate having a valid Commercial Driver’s License, submits to a Federal Department of Transportation Pre-employment drug test (with negative test results), is subject to future random drug and alcohol testing and is registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Commercial Driver's License Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse. A revoked, suspended or canceled Driver's License within the last five (5) years may disqualify a candidate or three (3) serious traffic violations during any 12 months period of time will disqualify a candidate.
