Applications received in response to this announcement will be used to fill substitute Special Education Program Assistant (SEPA) vacancies at the MN State Academy for the Deaf (MSAD) for the 2024-2025 school year.

Applicants submitting resumes to this announcement will be in a pool of candidates considered throughout the school year.

This position provides substitute paraprofessional academic classroom instruction or student management aide support at MSAD.

Under general supervision, contributes to the design and delivery of academic instructional programs to deaf/hard of hearing or deaf/blind students.

Provides educational instruction and uses a variety of techniques to encourage appropriate behaviors.

Positions at the MN State Academy for the Deaf require American Sign Language (ASL) skills. Candidates will be assessed for signing skills prior to hire

Minimum Qualifications

At least two years of college credits (usually 60 credits in Minnesota) through an accredited institution of higher education; or

An associate’s or higher degree; or

A passing score on a valid and reliable formal assessment (ParaPro Assessment) demonstrating the knowledge and ability to assist with instruction in reading/language, writing, mathematics or readiness for each.

  • Knowledge of the deaf/hard of hearing and deaf/blind students and their educational practices.

  • Skill in writing basic reports, using arithmetic, and reading and interpreting charts and grafts.

  • Fluency in American Sign Language

  • Ability to read and write English sufficient to understand written policies, procedures, and education plans and to maintain records and documentation.

  • Human relations skills sufficient to establish rapport with and provide instruction to students.

  • Ability to perform emergency procedures and personal safety techniques.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working with deaf/hard of hearing students.

  • Knowledge of data practices as it relates to work in the social/human services field.

  • Demonstration of advanced sign language

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds (with assistance) and be able to sit, stand and walk throughout the day
