Responsibilities

A respiratory therapist provides assessment, treatment, and monitoring of cardiopulmonary disease across the continuum of care. A respiratory therapist functions as part of an interdisciplinary team that coordinates and provides continuity of care in a financially responsible manner. A respiratory therapist is able to quickly and accurately assess a patient's condition and communicates effectively to the care team concerning changes in patient's condition, results of diagnostic studies, symptomatology, and response to treatment.

Qualifications

Experience: Previous hospital experience preferred.

Education: The Respiratory Therapist job requires graduation from an accredited school of Respiratory Therapy and basic computer literacy. Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Therapy or healthcare related field is preferred.

Special Skills: Good verbal and written communication skills required. Function with initiative and independent judgment. Desire for continuous quality improvement. Basic computer literacy required.

Licensure & Certification: All respiratory therapists will hold the National Board for Respiratory Care entry level certification (CRT) prior to their first day of Mayo employment. All graduate respiratory therapists must possess valid permission (permanent or temporary permit) to practice with the licensing board in the state of hire prior to their first day of Mayo employment. The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential is required upon hire or by the end of one year of employment and must be maintained throughout employment. Additional NBRC specialty credentials preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) is required upon hire or within 90 days from hire date. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required upon hire or within 6 months from hire date. Pediatric Life Support (PALS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) where applicable. Additional life support certifications may be required by site of hire. All required certifications must be maintained throughout employment. New graduates who have been unable to secure their license prior to the first day of employment will agree to work within a role comparable to a student Respiratory Therapist. They will be accompanied at all times by a Licensed Respiratory Therapist in the presence of patients.

Three 12-hour day shifts per week, every third weekend. On-call after hour shifts, average 2-3 shifts per week.
