The Boeing Company Component Engineer in El Segundo, California

The Boeing Company is seeking a Component Engineer (Level 3) to join the Component Engineering (CE) department in El Segundo, California. The successful candidate will support space, missile systems, and aircraft avionics. This role will act as the prime interface between multiple satellite programs and a component engineering functional organization. The successful candidate in this role will have experience working with passive components (such as resistors, capacitors, inductors, magnetics, relays, switches), RF components (such as circulators, isolators, monolithic microwave integrated circuits, crystals, oscillators), and Active Components (such as integrated circuits, diodes, transistors, hybrids).

The Component Engineering (CE) department supports space, missile systems, and aircraft avionics. The CE team supports programs by reviewing and approving the selection of electronic components, qualifying electronic components for the applications in which they will be used, supporting the manufacture of components both in-house and at suppliers, conducting failure analysis and RCCA (root cause and corrective Action) as part of anomaly investigations, creating and revising specifications for components, and supporting subcontractor and suppliers to ensure electronic components are qualified for Boeing usage per the contract and the Parts, Materials and Processes (PMP) Plan. The roles and responsibilities described above spans the entire production cycle of the program. This position is in El Segundo in Southern California. Team members are specialized in different commodity areas including passives & interconnects, active devices and RF Devices. The team members also have knowledge of material characterization, electrical engineering, electronic materials, engineering drawings and specifications, engineering processes, and failure modes and analysis for electronic components.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Defines requirements and approves tools, equipment, materials, parts and processes used in the engineering design, manufacture and/or maintenance of products

  • Produces specifications and other documents to manage the deployment of tools, equipment, materials, parts and processes

  • Maintains compliance with contractual and regulatory obligations. Promotes standardization across business activities

  • Evaluates emerging technologies for potential application to business needs

  • Develops and qualifies new tools, equipment, materials, parts and processes to meet requirements. Integrates new technologies as appropriate

  • Manages test and audit programs to qualify suppliers to applicable requirements

  • Conducts analysis to characterize performance or determine reasons for failure of tools, materials, parts or processes. Implements corrective and preventive actions

  • Designs, develops and qualifies computer and production systems to satisfy user requirements

  • Uses project management tools to meet cost, technical, and schedule requirements

  • Incorporates environmental health and safety, LEAN and Quality principles

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret clearance Post-Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry

  • 2+ years of experience with magnetic commodities and/or connector commodities

  • 2+ years of component engineering experience

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Successfully completed a Tier 5 Investigation (T5), formerly known as a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) by the federal government within the last 5 years

  • Active Secret clearance

  • Experience in magnetics (transformers, inductors, MIL-PRF-27, MIL-STD-981)

  • Connectors experience (MIL-DTL-38999, MIL-PRF-39012, quadrax/twinax, etc.)

  • Experience reviewing and evaluating destructive physical analysis reports for high reliability electronic components.

  • Experience with earned value management system (EVMS), cost estimating, monitoring and control of cost and schedule, coordinating with multiple programs, and multiple component engineers

  • Experience with project management

  • Experience with space level military standards

  • Experience with working on space flight or military hardware

Typical Education/Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standar
