Optum AI is chartered to drive value on high impact enterprise AI problems, democratize AI through the enterprise ML platform, accelerate the adoption of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) and drive Responsible AI. Projecting to deliver $8.4B of benefit value over the next 5 years through these efforts as well as reduce risk through safe, accurate, and unbiased AI, this is a key focus of the enterprise.

As an individual contributor, as the Principal Engineer, you will lead the execution of multiple United AI Studio (UAIS) pillars while laying out the technical vision. You will guide and motivate a team of engineers to not only deliver products/solutions but also meet key metrics. Working in collaboration with the product owner, architects and engineers, the Principal Software Engineer, will drive the creation of the Enterprise AI/ML platform.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Raise the bar on excellence in execution in terms of quality, timeliness, and scalability

  • Take accountability for key engineering metrics of the platform specifically availability, reliability, and security

  • Develop and evolve engineering and product roadmap of UAIS

  • Collaborate across various lines of businesses as well as global locations to ensure smooth execution of critical projects across the board

  • Drive talent transformation as per the needs of business

  • Recommend applicable technical patterns and solutions that are aligned with architectural guiding principles and standards through a regular cadence of delivery and continuous improvement initiatives

  • Deep technical expertise to review designs and architectures

  • Drives technology modernization activities with architects and engineering teams including a shift to modular, data centric, open-source, and cloud-native technologies

  • Governs technical debt and promotes balance with technical

  • Achieve architectural objectives through influencing of product, capability, and engineering backlogs

  • Work closely with technical product owners in plotting required enablers to support business feature teams on the architecture runway, ensuring full lifecycle delivery through CI / CD pipeline

  • Improve engineering culture of the team

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or any STEM discipline

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience including developing algorithms using Data Structures, and practical applications of these to build software systems

  • 5+ years of experience in working in cloud-enabled solutions in Azure, AWS or GCP

  • 5+ years working in AI/ML engineering domain

  • 5+ years of experience working with an Agile development methodology

  • 2+ years expertise working in cloud security and ability to build highly secure enterprise platforms

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in cloud-enabled solutions in Azure

  • Experience building an Enterprise ML platform

  • Proven proponent of metrics & Engineering best practices, and demonstrable track record of addressing engineering efficiency bottlenecks

  • Proven success in collaborating with geographically distributed teams

  • Proven solid project planning and execution skills including estimating, scheduling, and executing on committed schedules

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $122,100 to $234,700 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
