The Principal Data Analyst / Engineer will use their knowledge of SAS and Python or SQL to lead the transition of on-prem analytics to a cloud-based environment. Using multiple datasets from multiple sources, the Principal Data Analyst/Engineer will create enriched data assets to generate analytic outputs and graphics to identify opportunities to enhance care and improve patient outcomes. Working closely with the growth office and product leaders, this individual will create output to drive over $2B in annual sales for our Optum businesses. In addition to being a strong individual contributor, the Principal Data Analyst / Engineer will have opportunities to define and execute independent projects. As a leader on the team, the Principal Data Analyst / Engineer will also mentor junior staff in the department.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Re-write existing SAS-based code that runs against claims data into Python and/or SQL for cloud-based computing leveraging Snowflake

  • Apply data and query management principles to maximize efficiency of processing

  • Collaborate with SAS Analysts on the team to streamline processes

  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to develop outputs that support data visualization needs in PowerBI

  • Collaborate with Tableau developer and business stakeholders to develop outputs that support data visualization needs in Tableau

  • Gain a solid understanding of and leverage the data enrichments provided by an existing analytics platform

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field

  • 5+ years of experience developing code to analyze healthcare claims using SAS

  • 3+ years of experience developing code to analyze healthcare claims using SQL and/or Python

  • 1+ years working in a cloud-based environment, preferably Azure

  • Problem-solving skills to resolve data, calculation, join or performance issues that appear during development, testing and production

  • Experience applying a broad range of statistical, mathematical, or computational approaches using data to solve problems

  • Experience managing SAS code transitions to cloud environments

  • Good written and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field

  • SAS Base and/or SAS Advanced Certification

  • 3+ years managing cloud-based development processes (Python and/or SQL)

  • Experience working with Snowflake and/or Databricks in Azure

  • Experience with PowerBI and/or Tableau

Colorado, Connecticut or Nevada Residents Only : The salary range for Colorado/Connecticut/Nevada residents is $97,300 to $176,900. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
