Optum is seeking a dynamic and motivated individual to fill the role of Market Access Director. This leadership role is for a new service line within the Optum network. As a Market Access Director, you will be responsible for managing customer relationships and sales growth across external PBMs, pharmacies (including specialty pharmacies), and other trade channels. You will develop and execute on key sales, marketing, and rebate and pricing strategies, expanding relationships with target customers to meet commercial objectives.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the pricing & market access strategy, channel strategy, reimbursement insights & analytics, and Gross-to-Net management strategy for Optum’s biopharmaceutical products, working closely with payers and PBM/GPOs to secure formulary positions and distributors, pharmacies, providers, and other customers to manage sales channels

  • Lead the organization to manage the forecasting and optimization of Gross-to-Net, closely coordinating with Finance and Accounting

  • Lead the analysis, management, and optimization of payer mix (e.g., Commercial, Medicare, Medicaid) and sales/purchasing channel strategy (e.g. pharmacy, hospital, office/clinic, etc.)

  • Analyze and develop insights for provider net cost recovery for applicable products (i.e., infused HCP-administered pharmaceuticals)

  • Develop a sales and trade strategy to support provider access to buy-and-bill drugs

  • Manage and oversee customer-facing Key Account Managers to lead account management processes and relationship building across key accounts including PBMs, GPOs, pharmacies, distributors, etc.

  • Establish close relationships with new customers and key accounts, as well as manage existing relationships, to achieve revenue target for assigned regions

  • Negotiate with customers across channels to continually develop strategy opportunities for Optum

  • Support development of customer-facing value proposition and marketing materials to support business development opportunities

  • Gather and validate key trends and market dynamics prioritize unique account targets and opportunities

  • Analyze relevant market and customer-specific data to influence pricing and rebate strategy for PBM/GPOs, pharmacies, distributors /wholesalers, and other key customer accounts

  • Effectively lead contract negotiations and execution, evaluating contract agreements and documents for execution

  • Oversee executed agreements to ensure continuous compliance with the contract terms

  • Serve as the central point of contact for key national accounts

  • Regularly conduct insights into marketplace, industry trends, customers, and competitors to drive key account strategies and annual account plans based on Optum’s pharma portfolio

  • Effectively collaborate with key stakeholders to ensure channel strategy alignment and overall impact to Optum

  • Appropriately represent customers internally and collaborate with sales, marketing, customer service, and finance teams to provide a market-leading service level to our customers

Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of professional pharmaceutical market access, healthcare, or policy experience

  • 7+ years of experience managing pharmaceutical markets and market access

  • 7+ years of analytic experience, making data-driven recommendations, assessing market dynamics, competitor activities, and trends in the pharma space, including biosimilars

  • Experience developing flexible pharmaceutical channel strategies for product distribution and product pricing based on customer preferences

  • Experience and understanding working in a compliant manner when interacting with U.S. and global healthcare professionals

  • Experience delivering verbal and written client-facing presentations and developing written content for executive summaries

  • Possesses a technical aptitude to comprehend and communicate clinical benefits for a product’s approved marketing label indications

  • Experience applying knowledge of pharmaceutical and regulatory environment, including FDA regulations regarding the promotion of pharmaceutical and medical products

  • Experience as a people leader, effectively leading teams and setting/achieving performance goals

  • Experience working with cross-functional teams including marketing, medical affairs, finance, compliance, supply chain and global operations

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possess existing relationships with pharmacies, PBMs, drug wholesalers, specialty distributors and small and large provider practices

  • Keen understanding of average sales price (ASP) calculations and impact on buy-and-bill practices for providers

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
