UnitedHealthcare’s Employer & Individual Legal team supports an array of diverse businesses primarily serving the commercial group and individual markets. E&I Legal seeks an outstanding and experienced Senior Associate General Counsel to serve a high-performing, growth-oriented sales and marketing team driving innovative consumer-acquisition strategies with an increasing focus on high-technology, digital marketing enabled by advanced analytics and working within an evolving regulatory landscape and highly regulated environment. The impact of the candidate’s work will be at a national level and will have responsibility for the entirety of the sales/marketing/lead generation legal guidance for the individual commercial business, as well as serve as the primary business attorney for the ICHRA product and business launch. The role enables development of innovative strategies and projects to achieve key sales and growth objectives and communicating with senior management on complex and diverse business problems that have a major impact on the business performance. The role supports UHG’s commitment to the development of a next-generation health system in a socially conscious manner and the implementation of actionable, practical, and timely policy and market solutions that can achieve universal coverage, affordability, better experiences for patients and physicians, and improved health outcomes.
The successful candidate for the Associate General Counsel- Global Solutions and Student Resources will be providing legal advice and assistance on corporate law, insurance regulation, contractual negotiation, as well as general commercial legal matters which arise as the businesses seek to expand both their geographic footprint and market share. You will be supported by subject matter experts covering compliance, employment law, data protection, international tax, competition law and intellectual property law. Key to your success will be your ability to build relationships and partner with the business in a large multinational matrix organization to find legally compliant solutions that support growth while minimizing risk for the enterprise. The successful candidate will report to the Deputy General Counsel, UnitedHealthcare. This role is likely to be home based with occasional international travel.
The primary focus for this role will be supporting the Global Solutions and Student Resources business with an emphasis on international work to support growth.

The successful candidate will possess the highest level of analytic, strategic thinking, project management, organizational, and communication skills (both oral and written); deep and broad knowledge of health care data, policy, and markets; passion for health care transformation; and excellent judgment. The successful candidate will play a lead role in managing and overseeing a team of both attorney and non-attorney staff supporting insurance advertising legal review of carrier collateral and distribution agency collateral, insurance producer commission agreements, marketing content creation, and risk mitigation for digital marketing of Medicare, Exchange and Commercial sales and lead generation pertaining thereto.

Primary Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will have a broad range of strategic and operational responsibilities related to advancing the business growth goals, ensuring regulatory risk mitigation, and delivering transformative consumer-focused digital shopping experiences
Assisting the business to roll-out different methodologies of reaching consumers and producers looking to provide health coverage solutions to the public
Collaborating on new product and market entrances
Interpreting legal/regulatory requirements and their business implications at the federal and state level with potential advocacy on proposed changes nationally (e.g., NAIC). Some contract drafting/reviewing
Building internal relationships across the enterprise leadership to advance/ align on sales, marketing, lead generation and sales practice
Drive collaboration with LCRA with advanced analytics (AI) and consumer data usage cases in our consumer marketing and lead generation strategies
Designing guidelines, rules of the road, etc.at cascading levels for the legal and regulatory requirements for current products/markets and evolving ones such as ICHRA and a broad digital engagement strategy

Required Qualifications:
Juris Doctor degree
Current license to practice law in one or more states
8+ years of professional experience
5+ years working for one or more health care organizations, insurance company systems government agencies, or similar organizations
Experience interpreting and driving business implementation of major legislation and providing legal risk analysis of changing market forces
Experience leading through ambiguity and evolving business models
Expertise working with legal documents, drafting and editing contract terms, creation of formal legal memoranda and especially bottom-line focused legal communications to business leaders with concise summaries of issues
A broad and flexible set of key legal skills and attributes, including the ability to: analyze business strategies and assess the legal, regulatory, and contractual risks and drive innovative risk-mitigation tactics; communicate effectively with business leaders and cross-functional stakeholders, translating policy-relevant analysis into business-relevant analysis and vice versa; write effectively, and think strategically and creatively in a dynamic environment
Must be located in Central or Eastern time zone
Ability to travel internationally on occasion
Preferred Qualifications:
Health care insurance, including Employer-Sponsored Insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Public Exchanges
Experience with ancillary and supplemental insurance coverages and/or supporting insurance agencies, agents and brokers
Experience with eCommerce, technology or Digital Marketing legal background
Solid oral and written communication skills and comfort presenting to a range of audiences, including business executives, and the broader public
Demonstrated ability to learn quickly
Knowledge of insurance business and the European regulatory landscape
International experience and cross border legal work

Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, or Washington, D.C. Residents Only: The salary range for this role is $122,100 to $234,700 annually. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with al minimum wage laws as applicable.
