This position will inspect potatoes and related commodities for grade and condition at shipping points and will inspect seed potato fields and storage facilities for certified seed potato producers and shippers in designated areas of Minnesota.

Minimum Qualifications

Hold a GED, high school diploma or equivalent

Experience with personal computers, computer peripherals such as printers and scanners and software such as PowerPoint, Excel, Word, SharePoint, and other web-based inspection tools.

Demonstrated experience with time management, organizing and planning work.

Ability to communicate orally and in writing in a professional, clear concise, accurate and effective manner to a wide range of audiences such as external clientele, industry, citizens of the state, regulated businesses, etc.

Experience interpreting and consistently applying written protocols and standards.

Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable motor vehicle record subject to review.

Preferred Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree or higher in Biology, Chemistry, Epidemiology, Public or Environmental Health, Animal or Food Science, or a related field,

Experience working with regulatory officials of other state and federal government agencies.

Industry food processing experience such as food safety auditing, food safety regulatory affairs, or food manufacturing industry experience in food production or sanitation operations or quality assurance work.

Experience inspecting or handling fruits and vegetables.

Experience making appropriate decisions with minimal direction and ability to follow and carry out detailed instructions given by the supervisor.

Laboratory work experience.

Physical Requirements

The physical requirements and environmental conditions described in this section are representative of those that may be required of an employee to successfully perform the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit for more than 1/3 of the work time using a computer and or telephone. Information is also communicated through writing and face-to face conversations with clients and visitors. The employee uses wrists, hands, and fingers to handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is required to stand; walk; and stoop, kneel or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus, color vision and eye/hand coordination. Working conditions are often cold, dark, and damp and may involve considerable amounts of dirt and decomposing plant material.
