MnDOT has a number of vacancies for the position of Temporary Transportation Associate (TA) located at various Truck Stations throughout District 1. Must be able to report to hired work location within one hour of being called.

This posting will also be used to recruit for future Road Maintenance/Snow and Ice positions. Vacancies may be located in: Duluth Subarea (Pike Lake, Nopeming); South Subarea (Pine City, Sandstone, Moose Lake, Carlton); Lakes Subarea (McGregor, Floodwood, Grand Rapids); Shore Subarea (Silver Bay, Grand Marais, Two Harbors); Range Subarea (Virginia, Ely, Hibbing); Border Subarea (Cook, Deer Lake, Littlefork, International Falls).

In the winter, the Transportation Associate drives and operates a variety of heavy equipment to perform snow plow duties, including maintaining roadways; removes snow from roadways and shoulders; applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals on stretches of highway under slippery conditions; removes frozen ice and material from culverts; prepares and inspects winter equipment, such as snowplow equipment, cutting edges and sanders; and cleans equipment post storm. Position performs preseason snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup including machine or hand sweeping; performs winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals; which includes all setup work associated with liquid anti-icing and de-icing chemicals, hauling, mixing, measuring, and reporting. Position also performs all work related to installing, repairing, maintaining, and removing snow fences; and replacing mailboxes; maintains documentation on snow and ice; and performs traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with no air brake restriction at the time of application and the ability to have tanker endorsementwithin 2 weeks of hire.

  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands of this job will vary, but typically requires the ability to lift 100 pounds maximum with frequent moving and/or lifting or otherwise transfer of objects such as 50-pound bags. This job also may require walking or moving or standing or sitting to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls. This job will require strenuous physical labor including but not limited to digging, shoveling, hauling, crawling, bending, pushing, pulling, and climbing.
