This posting is for two (2) entry level Transportation Worker positions for Buxton Maintenance. Work includes installing traffic and erosion control devices involved in road maintenance and construction activities, operate a variety of hand and power tools, clear right of way, repair pavements, assist with pipe installation and other drainage tasks, inventory materials, other assigned tasks; and operation of heavy equipment. Applicant must have the ability to operate a small tandem dump truck. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, shoveling, raking, asphalt, flagging traffic, ditching and shrubbing. This position may be subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or extreme circumstances.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Qualified applicants MUST submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

  • Experience using small hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, post hole diggers, hammer, screwdriver, torch, etc.

  • Experience performing manual labor

  • Experience operating power tools such as chainsaw, weed eater, skill saw, drill, compactor, jackhammer, etc.

Additional Expectations:

The ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions is required. This position is subject to outside and inside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards and oils. Visual acuity is required. A valid NC Class "A" CDL driver license or the ability to obtain a license within 90 days is required. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past two years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school education General Educational Development Diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
