  • This position is responsible for maintaining, repairing, altering and installing all types of electrical systems and performing other building functions according to all State and local codes.

  • Perform skilled installation, alterations, maintenance, inspection/testing, and repair of electrical wiring, apparatus and equipment for communication, lighting, heat, and power including, but not limited to high voltage switch gear, transformers, transmission lines for low voltage distribution, secondary sub-panels, alarm and signal circuits, electrical power control systems, elevators and standby generators according to specifications in the National and State Electrical and Safety Codes.

  • Direct and inspect the work of other building maintenance personnel such as trades and non-trades workers, seasonal laborers, and student workers.

  • Obtain required permits and affidavits to perform all electrical work; organize and file appropriate records.

  • Prepare estimates of time, materials and costs for electrical and other building related projects. Prepare and review plans for building related projects.

  • Maintain the knowledge and skills necessary to perform duties and record keeping required for all current and future computerized building related programs. Current programs include: preventative maintenance, work orders, building automation, security systems, cardkey access and fuel tank/fuel dispensing systems.

  • Perform or assist in performing all other building trades and non-trades functions related to building construction or remodeling and maintaining the integrity and maintenance of all building structures, building systems and building sites. This includes, but is not limited to heating/air conditioning, plumbing, carpentry, snow and ice removal, etc.

Minimum Qualifications

To qualify for the Building Utilities Mechanic, applicants must meet all the following:

  • Possession of a Minnesota Class A Journey Electrician license

  • Class D driver’s license

  • Knowledge and skills in the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in trades work sufficient to assist skilled trades staff in the completion of assigned projects.

  • Ability to perform semi-skilled trades work sufficient to complete minor trades plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and/or electrical systems and equipment.

  • Ability to perform minor repairs and adjustments to machinery and equipment including the general maintenance and minor repairs of buildings.

  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions sufficient to interpret and carry out assignments in a safe and efficient manner.

  • Skills in using hand and power tools and other trades equipment.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety measures related to trades work sufficient to perform the work safely and efficiently.

  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Leadership skills sufficient to provide leadwork direction that includes prioritizing and assigning job duties, directing, guiding, and reporting on work activities of other staff.

  • Experience with construction plans, blueprints, and electrical specifications sufficient to interpret, modify and follow them to complete electrical projects.

  • Experience with commercial/ industrial wiring and related voltage

  • Experience with building construction, remodeling, or other building trades.

Physical Requirements

A pre-placement physical examination is required for this position. Current employees who have successfully bid or are moving into specific job classifications will be required to complete the pre-employment physical exam. The scope of the physical exam will be limited to whether the employee can safely and effectively perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, in compliance with state and federal law.
