Novant Health Health Psychologist in Cornelius, North Carolina

Novant Health is seeking a Health Psychologist to collaborate within the Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Institute to provide clinical care for orthopedic patients, as well as contribute to service line clinical research and program development.

Clinical Care:

  • Addresses patient psychosocial factors in the care of both surgical and non-surgical orthopedic patients

  • Creates positive outcomes in patient care through the provision of ongoing clinical services for patients:

  • Education and psychological therapeutic interventions related to adjustment to injury, coping with surgery, or navigating physical limitations

  • Address mental health issues that may impact patient health (e.g., depression, anxiety, substance use issues)

  • Providing services for preoperative surgical optimization (e.g., smoking cessation, motivational interviewing for health behavior change)

  • Identifies and addresses factors that impact patient adherence to post-op recommendations

  • Collaborating actively and effectively with the interdisciplinary team (including physicians, nurses, and others as identified)

Service Line Clinical Research and Program Development:

  • Completes research in the fields of clinical psychology, health psychology, & orthopedic surgery

  • Publishes articles in peer-reviewed journals

  • Provides leadership and oversight to grant-funded programs and processes within the service line

  • Serves as speaker and service line representative at businesses, national conferences, and relevant events

This position will spend more than 50% of their clinical time functioning within an orthopedic clinic serving orthopedic trauma and fracture patients. Therefore, we are seeking an individual who is familiar with the delivery of psychological interventions within the context of an integrated care model, as well as working with patients who are experiencing significant physical injuries and limitations. Inpatient and outpatient opportunities exist depending on patient need. The successful applicant will have strong clinical experience with a wide variety of disorders and excel in a collaborative team environment.

  • Education: Ph.D Required in clinical psychology from an accredited college or university. Post-doctoral fellowship training in Rehabilitation Psychology is preferred.

  • Experience: Minimum of one year professional experience under the direction of a licensed psychologist or board certified psychiatrist and 2+ years working within the field of health psychology. Strong clinical skills in delivering evidence-based psychological interventions. Internship/Post-Doc training with relevant experience (rehabilitation psychology, health psychology). Experience working with patients in a medical setting and/or with new injuries/illness (preferred).

  • Licensure/Certification/Registration: Valid license to practice clinical psychology in North Carolina. Required.

  • Additional Skills Required: Knowledge of social service agencies, state regulations and APA standards as related to client treatment, patient rights and client/patient confidentiality.

  • Additional Skills Preferred: Previous clinical responsibilities to include psychological testing, diagnosis, crisis intervention, brief individual and group psychological testing techniques, administration and interpretation. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Knowledge, skills and abilities within multiple theoretical orientation. Patient centered focused. Experience working within a multidisciplinary team/medical setting.
