The Economic Scenario Generation Actuary will be a key part of the EEM (Equitable Economic Model) Specialty Team and will report to the Head of Economic Valuation and Reporting. They own the scenario generation process, particularly as relates to the use of the Moody’s Economic Scenario Generator, meeting customer needs across GAAP, STAT and EEM Valuation and the commercial business units. They are responsible for timely and accurate production of economic scenarios and user support, ongoing model development and process improvement on the scenario generator and its downstream tools. They will manage one off-shore team member.

A successful candidate must be skilled at working in a matrixed organization, delivering high-quality work product, learning complex concepts “on the fly” and will develop skills in project and people management.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide timely and well-controlled economic scenario sets to all stakeholders including actuarial valuation teams and business units, establishing thorough subject-matter expertise over both the production cycle and the theoretical foundation of the scenario generators.

  • Drive ongoing modernization of development of scenario generation tools/processes and analysis of alternative scenario generation approaches.

  • Support staffing & development of direct reports. Includes recruiting, check-ins, performance management and development opportunities.

  • Work closely with squads, coaches, and other key stakeholders to prioritize and successfully deliver on Objectives and ensure proper alignment of resources and skills based on priorities/OKR’s.

  • Maintain open lines of communication with key stakeholders, particularly Actuarial valuation and business line actuarial teams, including strong partnership in prioritization of transversal actuarial initiatives.

  • Belief in a non-hierarchical culture of collaboration, transparency, safety and trust.

  • Willingness to “roll up the sleeves” and to go outside comfort zone to learn, ability to push peers and direct reports to do the same.

  • Opportunity to progress additionally into EEM Consolidation work, a highly impactful and visible function responsible for compiling and explaining EEM results to stakeholders including senior management.

Location: This role can work out of our offices in Charlotte, NC or New York, NY OR be 100% remote.

The base salary range for this position is $105,000 - $141,000. Actual base salaries vary based on skills, experience, and geographical location. In addition to base pay, Equitable provides compensation to reward performance with base salary increases, spot bonuses, and short-term incentive compensation opportunities. Eligibility for these programs depends on level and functional area of responsibility.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree

  • ASA Designation

  • 3 years of life insurance industry experience including experience with financial modeling

Preferred Qualifications:

  • FSA Designation

  • Experience with economic valuation

SKILLS

Communicating Complex Concepts : Ability to use summarization and simplification techniques to explain complex technical concepts both verbally and in narrative writing in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience.

Application of Economic Concepts : Able to lead and support special projects that may require adaptation and synthesis of economic valuation techniques or other appropriate analytics developed “on the fly”.

Problem Solving : Analyzes and synthesizes information and devises alternative resolution strategies. Develops successful resolutions to critical or wide-impact problems.

Coaching Others : Knowledge of coaching and mentoring concepts and methods; ability to encourage, motivate, and guide individuals in learning and improving effectiveness.

Financial Risk Management : Develops strategy and best practices for management of risk. Champions the use of new risk management approaches and tools.

Insurance Products : Ability to apply the knowledge of Life Insurance and Variable Annuity products and develops an evaluation system to assess key business line performance. Knowledge of valuation and modeling practices and requirements and how profitability of our life products is reflected in our financial statements and results.

Insurance Finance and Actuarial Concepts : Provides recommendations for actuarial and financial modeling issues. Trains others on interpreting and analyzing a variety of corporate financial reports. Teaches others the unique contributions and interrelationship of different financial functions. Consults on financial goals, measures and results throughout the insurance industry. Participates in designing financial and actuarial tools and standards for a business unit.

Internal Controls : Advises stakeholders on the specifics of the organization's internal controls. Designs and publishes forms used for internal control documentation. Implements and enhances internal controls where value-adding and fit for purpose in multiple and diverse environments. Re-engineers business processes for the sake of improving internal controls. Trains others in processes required for compliance with new internal controls. Establishes corrective actions for use in cases of financial irregularities or dishonesty.
