Pearson Senior Director, Strategic Marketing Programs in Chandler, Arizona

As the Sr Director, Strategic Marketing programs, this position will drive marketing strategy and support our next wave of growth. Reporting to the SVP of Marketing & Enrollment, and working closely with the leadership from Business Development, Innovation/Product Development and Partner Account Delivery teams, the successful candidate will be a strategic marketing visionary, possess a passion for performance success, show demonstrative experience in marketing innovation, have a natural acuity for measurability, and an expertise in developing brand marketing strategies and plans that attract potential university partners.

This newly created role will look at the long-term roadmap and industry landscape for Pearson Online Learning Services in close collaboration with Innovation, Product Development and Business Development, and identify gaps, business cases, and marketing improvements to accelerate our performance. The business cases and improvements will be focused on scaling our marketing organization to be competitive within our industry, as well as understanding what core programs and initiatives will help make our marketing efforts more effective and efficient. These programs will be complimentary and additive to the core marketing capabilities for the business, built with an eye towards unlocking new channels and audiences through a test/learn/iterate approach.

The Sr Director, Strategic Marketing Programs will be accountable for designing a more deeply connected marketing motion that incorporates key facets of Innovation, Insight, New Product Development, New Business Development with Marketing & Enrollment. The remit will span across brand strategy, sales strategy alignment, account-specific partnership marketing, customer/learner innovation, digital demand generation, field marketing landing, and performance and measurement, with direct line of sight to business growth outcomes.

This role requires strong data-driven, marketing expertise, with a passion for innovation and both a solution-oriented mindset. Candidates should be well versed in, and comfortable with brand strategy, user experience strategy, marketing technology, consumer insight, partner development and recruitment services operations.

You will frequently author strategy and reporting documents that clearly and persuasively distill complex data points into actionable insights for POLS to support portfolio and audience growth. This role requires a commitment to goals, proactive examination, a relentless focus on the customer and learner and comfort working in ambiguity at the speed of business.

Main Responsibilities

  • Drive strategic alignment and bridge a solid partnership across Marketing & Enrollment, Innovation/Product Development and New Business Development teams, collaborating with executive leadership and leads to deliver marketing solutions across the portfolio with new academic partners as well as new external vendors to augment our service capabilities.

  • Identify, evaluate, drive, manage, and optimize net new Strategic Marketing initiatives across POLS to unlock new channels, new audiences, and new strategies and tactics.

  • Understand and deliver strategic ideas, a vision, and a plan against organizational growth - helping to identify ways for our organization to scale efficiently and effectively with key leadership stakeholders.

  • Own strategic brand development, ideation and execution of best-in-class integrated digital marketing strategies through various distribution and media channels that spotlight POLS as the best-in-class expert in the OPM vertical.

  • Collaborate with Innovation/Product Development, New Business Development to ensure all programs and initiatives are optimized with strategic marketing capabilities to deliver against overarching business goals and priorities.

  • Lead nascent marketing and enrollment partnership’s function focused on increasing POLS efficiencies.

  • Become an essential critical-thinking thought partner to the Product Development/Innovation and New Business Development teams by encouraging deep relationships with executive partners, staying abreast of evolving partner landscapes, communicating untapped opportunities to internal decision-makers, and delivering value to the org through transformational partnerships.

  • Serve as marketing liaison with Innovation, Product Development and New Business to monetize competitive insights that answer key business and partner questions that inform marketing, new business development and product strategies/go-to-market approaches.

  • Lead and enable the team success by modeling best-in-class negotiation and partnership development capabilities (including fluency in working on first-of-its kind agreements), driving internal alignment with key stakeholders, and delivering on strategic priorities including new deal inputs, proformas, marketing plans, demand generation, and deal support.

  • Drive forward the POLS value proposition through integrated marketing campaigns and activations that help build brand, cultural narrative, innovative perception, and break-through messaging within a highly competitive space.

  • Maintain a constant interlock with the Innovation/Product Development and New Business Development teams to drive and sharpen our POLS value proposition.

  • Bring big ideas to the table, and inspire others to deliver bar-raising, best in class ideas and plans, obtaining cross functional buy-in and effectively and efficiently implementing ideas at scale through strategic marketing programs and initiatives.

  • Create an account-based, partner marketing methodology to gain alignment with the new business sales development team to assess, score and prioritize key accounts.

  • Lead a strong and inclusive team who are engaged and passionate about delivering innovative and engaging marketing programs.


  • 15+ years of marketing experience encompassing brand strategy, partnership marketing and digital media expertise.

  • Passion for, and experience with, leveraging data and evidence-based approaches to marketing where decisions are made based on well-designed research/experiments and then measured by market impacts and cost effectiveness.

  • Strategic thinker with the ability to build plans without heavy reliance on agency partners.

  • Experience building brands using low cost, high impact marketing initiatives.

  • Collaborative team player with "can do" attitude, willing and able to actively contribute to the work itself, adaptable to fast-paced, changing environment; with ability to work closely and influence executive leadership and other stakeholders.

  • Results-oriented; demonstrated history of exceptional work that has a direct impact on business results.

  • Stellar program management and organizational skills; ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects under strict timelines, as well as the ability to work well and deliver results in a demanding, dynamic environment.

  • Proficiency in translating and championing strategic marketing concepts, strategies and initiatives to audiences at all levels in the organization.

  • Excellence in budget planning and management, owning the rhythm of business checkpoints both internally and externally to ensure shared metrics accountability and proactive course correction as needed.

  • Land and execute key partnership marketing initiatives with cross functional leadership and teams to drive sales across our portfolio as well as enable and empower teams with the right amount of strategic guidance and coaching.

  • Experienced in evaluating and managing vendors.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with a proven track-record of successfully briefing team members at all levels of an organization

  • Positive, team-oriented attitude and inspiring leadership skills a must


  • 15+ years’ experience managing and mentoring a high-performance marketing team.

  • Ability to influence ELT-level executives and senior internal stakeholders in a complex, matrixed organization, including balancing competing priorities between external partners and internal teams.

  • Strong grasp of best practices in online performance marketing and the digital advertising landscape.

  • Exemplary leadership and management skills. Ability to lead by example and inspire others to achieve success. Track record of attracting and retaining top marketing talent and managing teams effectively to optimize results.

  • Prior experience in a digital agency environment strongly preferred.

  • Entrepreneurial Spirit - Willingness to challenge the status quo and try new things.

  • Self-starter that is comfortable working in ambiguity.

  • Author business-driving documents that surface key learnings and provide recommendations for our go-forward brand marketing strategy.

  • Relevant brand strategy marketing experience.

  • Advanced decision-making skills with proven ability to lead, influence, align and inspire

  • Operates with significant autonomy.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in related field (ex. Marketing, Communications, Advertising, Business). Master’s degree in marketing or business a plus.
