Cargill Starch Manufacturing Technology Engineer in Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Job Purpose and Impact

The Starch Manufacturing Technology Engineer will apply engineering techniques to improve manufacturing processes within the Starch department. In this role you will provide technical support, operations experience, continuous improvement, and project management skills to ensure safe, efficient and low-cost plant operations support.

Key Accountabilities

  • Maintain involvement with and understanding of breakthrough technologies. Assist and support R&D section in trials, and eventual implementation of concepts. Provide technical leadership in developing business case for application of new technologies, and participate in project gate reviews, preliminary design activities, interface with the capital effectiveness team in validating the detailed design, and provide technical oversight during installation and start-up activities.

  • Analyze and develop solutions to engineering problems related to manufacturing equipment and systems or the causes of component failures.

  • Lead efforts in optimizing the current operations and identifying value creation opportunities through the use of continuous improvement tools and driving execution through Cargill’s governance processes.

  • Lead the site in monitoring performance and identifying opportunities through analysis of key performance indicators, manufacturing cost reports, and stable operations activities to create year on year

  • Independently handle complex issues with minimal supervision, while escalating only the most complex issues to appropriate staff.

  • Provide technical leadership in the application of the Process Safety Risk Management (PSRM) program, including assembly of Process Safety Information, participation in Process Risk Assessments, identification of mitigating actions to close gaps identified in Risk Assessments, and providing technical leadership to the closure of gaps.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience

  • Minimum of four years of related work experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Lean/Six sigma green belt certification

  • Project management and process safety management experience

  • Experience working in starch processing, quality, productivity and cost

  • Experience with continuous improvement or capital projects in a manufacturing area

  • Demonstrated experience with assessing process risk and implementation of safeguards

  • Demonstrated experience in using process data to identify and execute on value generation opportunities
