National Grid Head of Environment & Sustainability in Cardiff, United Kingdom

The opportunity

We are looking for a visionary and collaborative leader to join us as the Head of Environment & Sustainability to drive our National Grid Electricity Distribution (NGED) business forward on environment, sustainability, and net-zero, through providing a clear strategy and roadmap for delivery.

Reporting into the Director of Safety, Health and Environment you’ll oversee high profile environment and sustainability projects demonstrating innovation, continuous improvement and best practice across NGED. Drawing on your your climate change, sustainability, and environmental expertise you’ll develop and maintain appropriate policies and reporting frameworks to meet our business objectives and maintain our ISO accreditation.

As can accomplished people leader you’ll manage and motivate a team of environment and sustainability subject matter experts (SMEs), whilst showcasing your ability to develop a culture of high performance.

This is a hybrid working role (3 days per week at the office) and can be based in any of our license areas: East Midlands, West Midlands, South West or South Wales.

What you'll do

• Spearhead the development and management of the Environmental Management System.

• Be the principal point of contact for the NGED Executive on material matters around the environment, climate change and sustainability.

• Work with the Chief Sustainability team to ensure NGED sustainability strategies align with NG group strategies and commitments.

• Develop climate change, sustainability and environment strategies and polices that both help the NGED business achieve its objectives and protect/enhance business reputation.

• Provide environment and sustainability expertise to the ED business.

About you

• Effective leadership skills with the ability manage change and develop a high performing team, enthusiastic about good customer service and improved productivity.

• Experience in development and maintenance of Management Systems (preferably ISO 14001 Lead Auditor qualified)

• Substantial experience directing and working within climate change, sustainability, and environmental sector.

• Previous management in operational and environmental activities

• An exceptional communicator with the people skills who is able to build effective relationships at all levels of business up to ExCo level and with external contacts - suppliers, legislative bodies, and government institutions.

• Ability to demonstrate sound constructive decision-making abilities and interfacing with regulatory bodies and peer organisations.

• A strategic and innovative thinker who is skilled at developing innovative approaches.

• Open to the adoption of performance excellence philosophies, tools, and techniques to drive continuous improvement and eliminate waste.

• Commercial Acumen and drive to deliver large and complex strategies.

What we can offer you

A competitive salary between £70,000 - £90,000 dependent on experience.
