Biogen Director of Strategy and Execution, US Rare Disease Franchise in Cambridge, Massachusetts

About This Role

The Director of Strategy and Execution is responsible for ensuring the US Rare Franchise is best positioned to deliver on its strategy and business priorities by driving innovation, agility and alignment across the Franchise and cross-functional partners.  This position reports to the VP/Head of US Rare.  The role is an empowered member of the Rare Leadership Team (Rare LT) and ensures operational excellence throughout pre, peri and post-launch of all products in the Franchise.  This role will establish and maintain a portfolio of key initiatives in close collaboration with Rare LT and cross-functional leaders.  This person will lead collaboratively through influence and direct, as appropriate, cross-functional project teams and be a trusted advisor/leader to the broader Rare Franchise.   

What You'll Do 

  • Manage information flow and ensure appropriate executive communications among the matrixed and cross-functional organization, this includes concise and timely updates to the CEO, North American President, North American Leadership Team, CFO, Executive Committee and Board of Directors

  • Be a trusted strategic partner to Head of US Rare, including proactively highlighting business critical risks/opportunities, and planning and directing the most critical organizational, financial, and operational activities for US Rare

  • Identify opportunities to establish and continuously improve business practices and processes to maximize resources and achieve operational excellence across US Rare Franchise

  • Own US Rare budget from development through execution, working closely with US Rare LT and finance to ensure US Rare stays within +/- 5% of annual target

  • Responsible for ensuring US Rare stays on track to annual and long-term goals through leading regular US Rare reviews, US Rare LT meetings, and Extended US Rare LT meetings

  • Identify, support, and in some cases lead the continuous improvement of barriers to execution throughout the Franchise

  • Drive a strong culture and environment that will foster accountability, teamwork and mutual trust and respect for all team members

Who You Are

You have strong leadership skills, knowledge of biopharma industry standards and practices and experience in Program Management and Business Process. While you hold accountability above all else, you must also possess the ability to generate enthusiasm, the ability to quickly gain trust and respect of peers and senior leadership and have a track record of successfully driving results through strong partnership with others.

  • Bachelor’s degree required

  • 10+ years of relevant experience; Consultant Work, Pharmaceutical Operations, pharma/biotech a plus

  • Proven business acumen (e.g. business degree, MBA, or previous role(s) proving business acumen development)

  • Strong organizational, managerial and leadership skills (including influence without formal authority)

  • Excellent social competencies and ability to work in a highly matrixed organization effectively and efficiently

  • Excellent communication skills and strong ability to build and cultivate internal and external networks

  • Proven track record of holding self and others accountable

  • Strong ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced environment

  • Fast learner with strong ability to identify critical issues before they reach a crisis point and to timely develop and implement action items

  • Excellent analytical, strategic thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills

  • Strong operational skills and project/ timeline management capabilities

  • Excellent command of computer skills (Excel, Outlook, Word, Power Point, etc.)

Preferred Skills

  • Masters or MBA 

  • Experience in therapeutic areas of specialty, rare disease preferred

  • Change management experience

  • Is open to and generates new innovations and embraces digital solutions
