Biogen Associate Director, Enterprise Risk Management in Cambridge, Massachusetts

About This Role

The Associate Director, Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) plays a crucial program leadership role within the organization’s Enterprise Risk Management function. Leveraging your in-depth biotech/pharmaceutical expertise, you will build capabilities and risk management acumen within business functions. You will engage with stakeholders responsible for risk management activities, foster relationships and develop insights to mature the global risk management program at Biogen. This position involves championing a risk-aware culture, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and developing fit-for-purpose policies and processes to enhance the company's risk resilience.

The Associate Director, Enterprise Risk Management ensures robust risk management practices are established, implemented and monitored across the full organization, including R&D, Commercialization, Manufacturing and Corporate Functions. By providing data-driven insights and collaborating with various stakeholders, this role contributes to the organization's ability to make informed decisions, protect its assets, and maintain regulatory compliance in a dynamic industry. This role has accountability across all three risk management verticals for Biogen including the Corporate Risk Register, Business Continuity Planning and Crisis Management.

What You'll Do

ERM Program Management

  • Design and mature processes used to identify and assess potential enterprise risks for Biogen, including financial, operational, strategic, compliance and reputational risks. 

  • Liaise with cross-functional leaders to plan/oversee annual ERM business processes including annual planning calendar and deliverables for the ERM Committee, Executive Committee, Corporate Compliance, Corporate Audit and the Board of Directors.

  • Collaborate with functional risk representatives to employ a consistent approach to risk assessment, mitigation monitoring and reporting.

  • Partner with leaders to capture cross-functional risk management activities and prepare risk reports for senior management, highlighting key risk areas, mitigation efforts, and recommendations.

  • Facilitate risk discussions with cross-functional teams to integrate risk management practices into daily operations, project planning.

Team Leadership:

  • Lead and coordinate cross-functional teams to conduct risk assessments, align on mitigation strategies and track action items for emerging corporate risks.

  • Work closely with business units to identify interdependencies across risk mitigation plans and evaluate control effectiveness.

  • Facilitate communication and collaboration among team members to ensure alignment and resolve conflicts.

  • Organize and lead regular project meetings to review progress, address issues, and make necessary adjustments.

  • Partner with external vendors and internal teams to plan and facilitate crisis management tabletop exercises.

Risk Management Policies, Procedures and Training:

  • Develop and implement risk management policies and process tailored to the unique challenges of the biotech industry and in alignment with internal business requirements.

  • Identify gaps and develop recommendations to improve the quality of risk management documentation, tools, templates and communication.

  • Champion ERM within the business and provide training to stakeholders on Biogen risk management processes and functional expectations.

  • Collect stakeholder feedback and communicate improvement recommendations in a clear and actionable manner.

  • Engage internally and externally to stay informed of industry trends and best practices.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Monitor changes in regulations and industry standards and update risk management practices accordingly.

  • Collaborate with internal audit, compliance to support risk related audits and assessments.

  • Provide risk management subject matter expertise that ensures compliance with relevant regulatory requirements.

Required Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, project management, or a related field. Advanced degrees (e.g., MBA) are advantageous.

  • 10+ years total work experience in risk management, program management, compliance or business process improvement.

  • 3-5 years of experience within the pharmaceutical industry required.

  • Strong business acumen and understanding of biotechnology industry including drug development, regulatory compliance and relevant business operations.  

  • Proven experience in developing and implementing corporate programs using organizational change management principles.
