National Grid Mechanical & Electrical Fitter - Substations - Suffolk in Cambridge, United Kingdom

About the Role

As a Mechanical & Electrical Fitter – Substations, you will be required to live within a 30-minute commute of our Bramford substation in Ipswich as you will join our Central Suffolk team covering 4 substations spanning Ipswich, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk. The Mechanical & Electrical Fitter – Substations will undertake a wide range of craft duties on substation plant and equipment including installation of new equipment, refurbishment and maintenance of existing equipment, fault investigation & repair as well as routine condition monitoring in line with commercial targets. Throughout the year there are some requirements for weekend work for which overtime will be paid. You’ll also benefit from our industry-leading training at our facilities based in Eakring, Nottinghamshire, a training programme will be provided which will require occasional travel to this site. The working environment is outdoors, you’ll get to work on complex 400kV circuit breakers, transformers, high speed on load tap changers, plus all kinds of ancillary equipment, DC battery systems, air compressors, diesels generators etc.

Key Responsibilities:

• Install, refurbish, maintain, fault investigate/repair and condition monitor

• Give early escalation to the Project Leader or Line Manager of variances to the plan

• Ensure work is in line with assigned standard job times and unit costs

• Drive safe collaborative working practices and accurate cost capture using outage hubs

• Carry out roles as defined in ‘Competent Person’

• Carry out the roles of ‘Person in Charge’ (PIC)

• Carry out nominated statutory and mandatory duties

• Eliminate accidents through risk assessments, method statements, hazard awareness and reporting

• Provide mentoring and/or training to less experienced staff

• Utilise systems to record and access data in an accurate and timely manner

• Carry out a lead role within the team

About You

Are you a self-motivated professional who is safety focused and able to work unsupervised and who has strong attention to detail and time management skills? If so, our Mechanical & Electrical Fitter – Substations vacancy may be for you:

Essential:

• A full driving licence that permits you to drive in the UK

• Engineering level 3 qualification or an equivalent recognised apprenticeship

• Significant post qualification on the tools Mechanical or Electrical engineering experience

• Experience of working to general safety and safety procedures

• Competency with Microsoft Suites including Word and Office

Desirable:

• NEBOSH, IOSH or equivalent qualification

• Experience of RAMS and/or method statements

• Substation experience

• Experience of working on transmission equipment

• Experience of working at heights and/or confined spaces

• Experience of permit to work systems
