The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

The person hired for the position of Machine Vision Engineer will be part of an engineering team that creates, develops and supports automated machine vision systems which are or will be installed in coating, converting and other manufacturing process equipment. In this position the engineer will work closely with corporate machine vision resources to support local initiatives with all supported divisions; Transportation Safety Division, Personal Safety Division and others.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Learn about inspection systems by optimizing and supporting a variety of existing machine vision systems

  • Provide consultation, specifications, estimates, and solutions for machine vision systems

  • Assist business partners in implementing machine vision to increase process performance

  • Work with internal/external resources to ensure technical, cost and schedule requirements are met

  • Communicate with equipment suppliers in the selection, purchase and delivery of items

  • Participate in the assembly/checkout, installation and commissioning of equipment.

  • Work with business partners to implement systems to continuously monitor process performance

  • Develop an understanding of industry and 3M technologies and participate in the advancement of the technology and intellectual property creation and protection

  • Successfully interact with multiple discipline teams including 3M laboratories, engineering, manufacturing, and suppliers

  • Communicate effectively with project teams

Your Skills and Expertise To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution

  • One (1) year experience with software development, optical systems and/or machine vision in a private, public, government or military environment

    Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution

  • Previous internship or 1-2 years of experience in Engineering & Manufacturing related areas

  • Experience in sensors and measurements

  • Experience with Cognex, Datalogic/PPT Vision, or AccuSentry Vision systems

  • Basic to moderate knowledge of network communications

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Strong interest and experience in manufacturing automation

  • Self-starter with the ability to work collaboratively on a wide range of technical challenges

Travel: May include up to 5% domestic
