Under limited supervision, oversees the daily activities of the laboratory; prepares lab experiments, maintains the lab equipment and inventory; maintains safety materials for the labs; assists in the management, maintenance, and care of the greenhouse; assists professors with set up/development of new laboratories; monitors the department budget; orders necessary supplies per faculty requests; writes and maintains contracts with vendors for supplies and lab equipment maintenance, requests and maintains student-worker budget; hires/supervises work-study students; performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate or higher degree in biology

  • Considerable working knowledge of basic biology theory and nomenclature

  • Familiarity with laboratory equipment, procedures, and techniques

  • Strong trouble-shooting abilities as they relate to minor repairs

  • Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written communication to a variety of audiences

  • Organizational abilities

Preferred Qualifications

  • BSinBiologywithcourseworkinchemistry

  • Collegelevelcourseworkinbiologyincludingintroductoryandadvancedcourses

  • Workingknowledgeoflaboratoryprinciples,techniquesandoperationofequipment

  • Knowledge of methods of securing and safely transporting and disposing of biohazard agents

  • ComputercompetenceandknowledgeofMSOffice and other necessary software

  • Abilitytoassistinthemaintenanceofsoftwareproducts

  • Experience in molecular biology, including use of micropipets and setting up reactions such as PCR and restriction enzyme digestions, as well as sterile technique and knowledge of preservation and storage of molecular reagents.
