Pratt Assistant to the Chair in Brooklyn, New York

The Writing Department at Pratt Institute is searching for an Assistant to the Chair who will be a key member of its three-person collaborative administrative team and participate in daily operations and strategic decision-making to advance the department’s mission. The Assistant to the Chair handles daily departmental activities, managing several budgets, maintaining departmental archives, assisting students with questions related to classes, advising, and registration, supervising student workers, facilitating departmental communications and social media, and managing purchasing and accounting. This position will have opportunities to participate in the launch and operations of key department strategic plan initiatives including grantwriting, the Cannoneer studios, and the Soundspace Audio Hub.

Essential Duties include the following:

  • Provide administrative support for the department Chair.

  • Manage all administrative aspects of the department in conjunction with the department Chair and Assistant Chair.

  • Manage budgets, including preparing projections and analysis as appropriate, processing all department paperwork for accounting, reimbursements, and purchase requisitions, and troubleshooting payments queries.

  • Generate new hire paperwork, assist in the onboarding of new faculty and maintain all faculty files.

  • Oversee department facilities and handle improvements as needed.

  • Prepare course schedules, faculty payroll, stipends, course release time and other documentation.

  • Hire, manage, schedule and mentor student workers.

  • Work closely with the Chair and faculty on special department projects and initiatives.

  • Manage department social media.

  • Analyze data and prepare reports for the Chair regarding enrollments, retention, and other departmental matters.
