Description About the Department The Graduate Communications Design department seeks a new faculty member who will bring a unique blend of creative and technical expertise, with a strong focus on how computational practices can be applied in innovative and poetic ways. A background in fostering experimental, interdisciplinary projects and engaging with emergent technologies in ways that challenge conventional norms and stimulate critical discourse is essential. The role requires a commitment to nurturing students' creative exploration while grounding their work in a deep understanding of theoretical frameworks and practices. The department offers two degrees, an MFA in Communications Design and an MS in Packaging, Identities and Systems Design, both of which emphasize hands-on studio practice, providing students with the opportunity to develop and refine critical thinking and making skills while developing their unique design voice: a prerequisite for leadership in the communications design field. The Graduate Communications Design department adopts a future-oriented perspective by amplifying students' ability to harness the inventive potential of making, create transformative and sustainable design tools and strategies, and thrive within and beyond the multiverse of professional contexts. Position Summary The Graduate Communications Design department at Pratt Institute seeks to hire a full time tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank to begin Fall 2025. The successful candidate will teach in our MFA in Communications Design and an MS in Packaging Identities and Systems Design degrees. Candidates must demonstrate a strong foundation in technical aspects of programming and the conceptual underpinnings of design and critical technology. We are open to a wide range of interests from the field of Design Technology. Potential areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: Critical technology Innovative and poetic computational practices Design and accessibility Natural language processing and automation Networks and collective practices Embodied, physical, and wearable computing Other related areas Examples of Duties Teach a range of courses as well as electives in the candidate's area of expertise. Demonstrate and maintain substantial creative practice and research within your field. Participate in curriculum development and assessment of student learning. Participate in committee work and other services to the department, the school and Institute. Embrace new forms of critically engaged practice and pedagogy and contribute to the development of a strong culture of design scholarship, research and innovation in the department. Build interdisciplinary collaborations both inside and outside the School of Design. Carry a load of 12 converted contact hours per semester, comprising teaching and service to the department and institute. Contribute to the life of the school. Qualifications A doctorate or masters degree in Communications Design, Design technology, Interaction design, Human Computer Interaction or a related discipline. Demonstrated excellence in teaching with a minimum of 3 year's experience at the undergraduate and/or graduate level. A record of professional practice and creative work/ research in the technical aspects of programming and the conceptual underpinnings of design and critical technology. Candidates must also have excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrated intercultural competence, demonstrated commitment to DEI, and the ability to work well with diverse populations.
