Job Information
HERC: Metro New York & Southern Connecticut Research Technician C in Bronx, New York
Employer Name: Albert Einstein College of Medicine
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES This job is half lab management, half research. First, routine lab management. This includes purchase order and equipment maintenance. When needed, also coordinate with the departmental facility manager for equipment purchase/repair. We are a small lab so the amount of work involved here is minimum. In addition, also maintain a set of common use cell lines (up to 8 at a time) in culture for shared lab use. The second responsibility involves a research project that examines the role of a specific cancer-causing genetic alteration in targeted drug responsiveness and epigenetic regulation. We are studying a retrovirus (HTLV-1)-induced aggressive mature T cell lymphoma called ATLL. We have found that the chromatin remodeler p300 is under-expressed in disease cells of many ATLL patients due to loss-of-function mutations and additional mechanisms. We already have preliminary data for a hypothesis driven story but need to generate more data to complete this NIH-founded project. The new technician will be trained and then perform the following techniques: tissue culture, drug toxicity assays, DNA/RNA/Protein sample preparation, RT-PCR, Western blot, simple flow cytometry (less than 4 colors), and chromatin IP/cut-and-run. This position does not involve working with animals. GPA >= 3.5 Experience: Worked in a research lab for >= 2 years and practiced routine molecular biology techniques for discovery research. Participated in scientific presentations, and has an interest in pursuing either medicine or laboratory research as a career path. Proven track record working with two types of lab techniques: Western blot (a type of experiment that evaluate protein expression) and drug toxicity tests in cancer cells. Interest in pursuing a PhD degree or a career in research. Skills/knowledge . Has a solid grasp of biochemistry and molecular biology principles, good understanding of cell, developmental, and cancer biology concepts. Proficient in culturing mammalian cells, preparing DNA/RNA/protein samples, and running RT-PCR. Should also be proficient with either Western Blot or the basic principles of flow cytometry.
