Job Summary

The NYPL is hiring Tutors to provide homework help and enrichment activities to elementary grade students in 7 branch libraries.

Tutors will work either 16 hours per week, M-Th, during the program hours of approximately 3-6PM with additional hours required for professional development, meetings, and preparation, or 8 hours per week on either Mondays and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays during those same times. Tutors will work approximately 36 weeks per year, September 14, 2022 through June 15, 2023. The Tutor will not be scheduled to work the weeks of December 19, December 26, February 20, April 10, nor will they be scheduled to work during any federal holidays.

Responsibilities:

  • The After School Tutor will work under the supervision of the Program Coordinator and will:

  • Work in small groups with students to provide them with academic tutoring to improve their understanding of math, reading, social studies and/or science, at all levels,

  • Use best practices when tutoring students,

  • Develop positive relationships with students that foster their academic and personal growth,

  • Support Teen Reading Ambassador Pages assigned to each location,

  • Administer enrichment activities to students in the afterschool hours,

  • Support the Children’s Librarian and other branch staff in the implementation of programs in the afterschool hours,

  • May be assigned to work in other program sites,

  • Perform other duties assigned

Required Education, Experience & Skills

Required Education and Certifications

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate degree program, with at least two or more years completed or equivalent experience, at an approved accredited educational institution; or

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • HS Diploma or equivalent required

Required Experience

  • Prior experience working in a formal or informal education setting with children and/or teens

  • Experience teaching and/or tutoring in multiple subject areas

Required Skills

  • Effective communication skills in working with children, parents, co-workers and supervisors

  • Interest in urban library services

  • Interest in helping children to improve their reading, writing, math, social studies, and science skills

  • Possess a concrete understanding of basic elementary Math, Science, English, History, and Foreign Language concepts

  • Computer and basic technology skills such as Microsoft Office Suite and Google Applications

  • Ability to speak foreign languages preferred
