HERC: Metro New York & Southern Connecticut Electrical Laboratory Technician in Bronx, New York

Position title: Lab Technician (Electrical power, Electronics, and Micro Computer Labs) Section I: Scope Technical support for the Electrical/Electronic/Micro Computer Laboratories in the School of Engineering. Maintain and upgrade computers and equipment (both hardware and software). Ensure safe work environment in the laboratories and, when requested, advise individuals regarding lab safety. When needed, assist with timely small item repairs during laboratory sessions Section II: Responsibilities Reports to: Technical Supervisor, School of Engineering Supervises: None Responsibilities: Technical support for the Electrical/Electronics/Microcomputer Laboratories in the School of Engineering Maintain the lab organization and layout to ensure a safe environment for all individuals working in that laboratory. Maintain and upgrade (hardware, firmware, and software) for computers and electronic equipment Monitor the use and conditions of laboratory equipment to ensure all equipment are fully operational Instruct students in proper operation of equipment and tools, including soldering. When requested, demonstrate appropriate laboratory safety procedures Assist faculty members and students with special projects that require use of electrical/electronic/microcomputer components Collaborate with technical staff members in the School of Engineering and the rest of campus to ensure smooth lab operations Asist with various support duties and rotational assignments in support of the overall operations of the School of Engineering and its academic departments Keep track of the level of materials needed to carry out the lab experiments. Asist with the timely ordering of replacement components when needed. Section III: Qualifications Required: High School Diploma. A minimum of two years of vocational/technical school or equivalent knowledge, covering technical areas that include electrical, electronics and microcomputer engineering and/or technology. A minimum of two years of work experience with electrical and mechanical tools. Trained in lab safety. Ability to solder and desolder electronic components in laboratory equipment. Knowledge of multimeters and oscilloscopes. An ability to troubleshoot, repair, and assemble electrical, electronic, electro-mechanical, and microcomputer equipment. Ability to diagnose and carry out small to medium-level repair of damaged laboratory equipment. Interact with external service providers for routine maintenance and additional repairs. Preferred: Certification in lab operations in the areas of expertise. Knowledge of 3D printing and operation of 3D printers.
