This position is responsible for providing leadwork direction to the tutor/mentors, as well as acting as a tutor/mentor to the high school students in grades 9 – 12 on the campus of Central Lakes College who attend the five week Upward Bound summer program designed to provide academic and cultural experiences that will support their goals of attending a postsecondary institution. Students live in a residence hall for five weeks during the summer program. This position is designed to provide students in secondary, post-secondary, and graduate study with employment that assists them in reaching identifiable educational goals.

  • Monitor student’s safety and wellbeing during the Upward Bound camp to ensure a safe and healthy learning environment. Be available to students during all scheduled times, interacting with them on various activities, as well as ensuring the students follow all Upward Bound and Central Lakes College guidelines.

  • Develop and execute social and cultural programming/activities to enhance the student’s experiences and to meet the goals of the Upward Bound Summer program.

  • Provide academic tutoring and personal coaching to Upward Bound students to help ensure students success and meet Upward Bound goals.

  • Attend daily staff meetings to ensure accurate communication of information and the quality of the summer program is maintained.

  • Assist the Residence Hall Director, summer instructors, and Upward Bound professional staff as assigned to ensure success of program.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of a high school diploma.

  • At least 1 year of post-secondary education.

  • Currently enrolled in secondary, post-secondary, or graduate study programs.

  • Skill in communicating effectively to develop and implement policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Desire to work with and relate to a disadvantaged population.

  • Knowledge of residential hall living.

  • Strong leadership skills.

  • Ability to work as part of a team and strong interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated.

  • Ability to take initiative and be accountable for a wide range of responsibilities.

  • Strong support of goals of the Upward Bound program.

  • Willingness to be flexible and creative.

  • Background or current studies in counseling, education, or a related field.

  • Previous Upward Bound Tutor/Mentor experience.

  • Demonstrate experience in tutoring or counseling high school students.

  • Demonstrated high level of cultural competency and ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders, aligning with CLC's Culture of Caring environment.

Background check is required.
