Job Information

Pfizer Associate Director, Bioinformatics in Bothell, United States

ROLE SUMMARY

The Translational Oncology (TO) department within the Pfizer Oncology Division is seeking a highly motivated applicant to join our Bioinformatics team as an Associate Director. In oncology, the rapid development and deployment of increasingly sophisticated molecular assays has created an unprecedented scale of biomarker data for patients in clinical trials. This data represents an enormous opportunity to guide drug development in a data-driven manner while advancing the science of precision medicine. The scale of this data also means that extracting truly applicable biological and clinical findings from statistical noise is a non-trivial task.

A successful applicant will leverage modern data-science and bioinformatics approaches to explore high dimensional datasets, such as multiomic profiling data, in order to extract high-value insights into cancer biology and the mechanisms of action/resistance for a variety of therapeutics being developed by Pfizer Oncology. In addition, a successful applicant will also be able to simplify and communicate these insights to a multi-disciplinary team of subject matter experts ranging from assay specialists, biologists, clinicians, and statisticians. It is therefore expected that the candidate will have deep expertise in computational and data science methods, but also be able to bridge that knowledge to fundamental questions of biology and clinical impact.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Effectively collaborate within multidisciplinary translational teams to analyze clinical trial biomarker data, real world clinico-genomic data and publicly available cancer databases and datasets to inform clinical development plans, clinical trial designs and clinical trial results.

  • Use classical statistical approaches as well as data science-based methods to help us better predict patient populations most likely to benefit from novel drug therapies, as well as understand mechanisms of resistance.

  • Develop and help maintain data pipelines for the analysis of high-dimensional data (such as NGS) and support complex secondary analysis and visualizations of these data.

  • Expand Pfizer leadership in oncology drug development and Pfizer contributions to advancing the science of precision cancer medicine by contributing to internal and external data readouts and presentations, as well as publications in top tier journals.

  • Streamline and automate data processing for biomarker analyses where appropriate.

  • Help lead efforts in collaboration with Pfizer Digital to in-house data science and machine learning approaches from the scientific literature to drive innovation at Pfizer.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in computational biology, bioinformatics, biostatistics, computer science, genomics or a related field with postdoctoral research experience in Cancer Biology; or Ph.D. in cancer biology or related field with established advanced capability and track record in developing and applying computational and bioinformatics methods.

  • Five years or more of post-PhD academic and/or industry experience analyzing and mining large, multidimensional, genomics datasets (e.g. NGS, RNA-Seq, transcriptomics, proteomics, flow cytometry, etc.)

  • Fluency in the R programming environment and a comfort working in Linux.

  • General familiarity with good coding/software development best practices and the use of Git/GitHub.

  • A track record of publications demonstrating successful collaborations involving processing, analyzing and interpreting large genomics data sets, and in-depth knowledge, innovation and creativity in complex, integrative "omics" data analysis.

  • Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal, and communication (verbal and written) skills that contribute to positive, efficient, productive, inclusive and supportive collaboration within a multi-disciplinary team of diverse and experienced subject matter experts.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Prior experience with clinical trial data and familiarity with general clinical trial design principles.

  • Prior experience and comfort working in matrixed team structures.

  • Experience/fluency in Python.

  • Familiarity with workflow languages such as Nextflow/Snakemake/CWL.

  • Experience with cloud computing environments (AWS or Azure).

  • Use of CI/CD integrations with GitHub.
