Job Description

The Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences (CDS) is an interdisciplinary academic unit comprising scholars and researchers who are solely appointed in that unit as well as faculty with joint appointments in various schools and colleges at BU. CDS's mission is to be a catalyst for synergy and integration of research and education programs in computing and data sciences across the landscape of academic disciplines at BU. Founded in 2019 and housed in an iconic 19-story building to be completed in 2022, CDS complements and connects traditional academic disciplines through the language of computation and data. In support of the University's strategic goals, CDS is laying the foundation for promoting innovation-driven and civic-minded computing through thematic Impact Labs that act as catalysts for maximizing the real-world impact of its research, curricular, and co-curricular programs. Among a number of planned undergraduate and graduate programs, CDS is launching its undergraduate program for a BS in Data Science, and will be welcoming its first cohort of students, starting in Fall 2021.

CDS Undergraduate Academic Advisors serve as the principle points of contact for advising undergraduate students. As such, they run academic advising for students, especially first-year and second-year students, assisting and guiding them toward program completion and graduation.

This includes:

• Providing holistic counseling to students with diverse academic and career goals• Acting as a resource to students on academic policies, procedures, and requirements• Monitoring student academic progress and assisting them in making appropriate educational choices and decisions; and recommending appropriate interventions or remedies for students facing unexpected challenges related to their academic or life experience at BU.

In light of the expected fast-paced development of CDS faculty, programs, and administrative infrastructure, this role is expected to evolve with significant career development opportunities for a successful candidate. CDS believes that the cultural and social diversity of our community is vitally important to the distinction and excellence of our research and academic programs. To that end, we are especially eager to recruit colleagues who support our commitment to ensuring that BU is inclusive, equitable, diverse, and a place where all constituents can thrive.

Required Skills

We seek a dynamic and goals-oriented individual who is able to work both independently and be part of a team in an exciting new interdisciplinary academic unit. The role requires exceptional communication and organizational skills, the ability to engage optimally and empathetically with students who are in the early stages of their journey in higher education, and the ability to bring the significant capacities and resources available at BU to bear on the positive experience of students. As such, this role is expected to contribute significantly to the creation of a vibrant and supportive student community and culture.

This position is eligible for Boston University's generous benefits package including health, dental, life insurance, tuition remission, paid time off, and so much more!
