Tufts Medicine Student/Intern - Community Health Specialist in Boston, Massachusetts

Job Profile Summary

This research study focuses on interventions that aim to increase physical activity among residents of Boston Public Housing Developments. A Healthy Living Advocate (or HLA) is a trusted member of the community and optimally has experience with public housing (Boston or other cities) and/or community health public health-related work. This role involves working as a member of the research team and serving as a liaison for one of the intervention groups of the study. The HLA is creative and highly motivated and considers themselves to be physically active – preferably enjoys morning or afternoon walks. The HLA will cultivate relationships with participants to understand and support them in managing their physical activities. The HLA will connect with participants in person and both lead walks on marked walking trails around the developments and lead exercise sessions . Additionally, the HLA is comfortable working with families and children during physical activities. Overall, the HLA, following established safety guidelines, will conduct walking groups and exercise sessions for small groups that are conducted either indoors or outdoors all seasons of the year.

An informed and integral member of the General Internal Medicine Section, the Healthy Living Advocate will coordinate clinical research activities. They will work in a multidisciplinary environment on- and off-campus, with all appropriate members of the research team. The position requires being on-site in Boston, in community-based public housing developments, where the HLA will be responsible for arranging their own transportation to study sites and follow COVID-safety protocols.

Other research study associated activities include planning and coordinating the initiation of research study protocol, participation in study meetings, conference calls, and study presentations, with the potential for academic products (posters, papers, conference presentations).

Hours for this position are approximately 10-20 hours per week, with the option for more depending on the needs of the candidate.

Job Overview

Student intern will work under the supervision of a faculty member on a defined project in line with educational goals. Specific tasks and learning objectives will be defined by the student and faculty member.

Minimum Qualifications :

  1. Currently enrolled in a post-secondary degree program.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.   

  2. This is largely a sedentary role, which involves sitting most of the time, but may involve movements such as walking, standing, reaching, ascending/descending stairs and operating office equipment.   

  3. Frequently required to speak, hear, communicate and exchange information.   

  4. Ability to see and read computer displays, read fine print, and/or normal type size print and distinguish letters, numbers and symbols.   

Skills & Abilities:

.1. Fluency in English or Bi-lingual English/Spanish.

  1. Proficient with MicrosoftWord, PowerPoint, and Excel computer applications

3.Excellent and meticulous organizational and technical skills are of the utmost importance as are documentation skills, and interpersonal and communication skills.

  1. Ability to work independently, under supervision and as a part of a team
