Boston University SENIOR LEARNING DESIGNER, Office of the Provost in BOSTON, Massachusetts

Building on existing and emerging online education efforts across campus, the Online Learning Initiatives (OLI) department is a new and innovative central, university-wide organization that works to achieve economies of scale in marketing, lead generation and nurturing, course design and production, and course delivery associated with online at-scale degree and certificate offerings.

The Senior Learning Designer (SLD) reports to the Executive Director, Online Learning Initiatives, (OLI) Special Programs and works collaboratively in a matrix team environment to lead the design, development, and build of novel complex, online at-scale degree courses and programs. Focusing on the target audience, pedagogical goals, and overall learning experience for each project, the Senior Learning Designer will work to ensure courses meet the agreed upon specifications, and standards of quality for online learning.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead the work of matrix teams including Faculty, learning designers, learning facilitators, media producers, course operations, and others from within the At-scale unit and across BU schools/colleges in the design, develop, build, and launch of new and revised programs and courses.

  • Provide expertise to the broader OLI team and staff at BU schools/college in the design of scalable, cohort-based, global, team-based, hybrid, degree programs.

  • Special emphasis on articulating strategies to enable engaging, interactive, peer-to-peer asynchronous online learning.

  • Guide and conduct design and development of individual courses to meet pedagogical goals, ensure accessible design, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusive values, for a global audience that is also scalable.

  • Educate and mentor other Learning Designers in the development of innovative and novel instructional strategies.

  • In collaboration with the Senior, Innovation Education Technologist, facilitate the evaluation, adoption, and documentation of existing and new learning technology tools and applications.

  • Cultivate collaborative and professional relationships with faculty and other stakeholders while guiding individuals through the course and curricular design process.

  • Oversee the content quality review process for courses and programs, seeking opportunities for improvement in learning design to improve student learning experience or enable scale.

  • Contribute to the strategic development of the At-scale team and lead special projects and initiatives, as needed.

  • Foster and communicate to external audiences, the Learning Design expertise of the At-scale team, and cultivate an environment of shared and continuous learning within At-scale and with other Learning designers across BU.

  • Identify and lead efforts for continuous improvement for At-scale by defining and measuring efficacy of At-sale-developed learning assets and applications and proposing recommendations for revisions based on desired learning outcomes and learner interaction data.

Required Skills

  • B.A. or B.S; degree or certifications in instructional design or related field.

  • Eight to ten years of direct experience designing, creating, editing, and launching digital instructional content in a higher education setting.

  • Demonstrated ability to apply instructional design principles, learning theory, and educational technologies in the design and development of learning experiences.

  • Experience teaching, especially graduate or professional students, is desirable

  • Three to five years of experience working on cross functional or matrix teams, ideally within Higher Ed setting.

  • Leadership abilities in training, mentoring, and coaching designers in course design, learning experience design, and faculty relationship building.

  • Sound judgment, openness, and ability to see decision-implications at the detail and strategic levels.

  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a diverse, collaborative environment; an adaptable mindset to work as part of a growing team in the shifting landscape of the institution and higher education in general.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving and project management skills for themselves and the broader project(s) in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills demonstrated in a leadership context.
