We are looking for a research assistant excited about translational research to join Professor Robert Langer and Daniel Anderson’s laboratory at the Koch Institute of Integrative Cancer Research, MIT to support a research project on developing novel therapeutics for diabetes. This project is funded by a grant through Boston Children’s Hospital. This is a highly interdisciplinary project at the intersection of bioconjugate chemistry, pharmacology, pancreas and liver biology; and involves multiple collaborations. The role will involve running in vitro/ in vivo assays for evaluating compounds. In addition, the person will be expected to maintain accurate laboratory records, and stock laboratory supplies. This is a great opportunity for young trainees interested in gaining research experience in an interdisciplinary area combining chemistry with translational biology research before applying for graduate/medical school.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain and perform in vitro assays (in vitro biochemical assays such as PCR, ELISA).

  • Performs in vivo and ex vivo experiments in rodents, drug administration using various routes, tissue processing, etc.

  • Purify peptides, proteins using normal and reverse phase liquid chromatography. Records results accurately and troubleshoots procedures.

  • Keeps accurate logs of all experiments performed and communicates findings to supervisor.

  • Attends courses in safety procedures for handling, storage and disposal of biohazardous, flammable, corrosive and toxic materials. Carries out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols.

  • Conducts literature searches and reviews, compiling information for journals and suggesting uses for new techniques to the P.I. Attends courses, lectures and conferences to further own knowledge of research and laboratory techniques, consulting with other researchers to exchange information.

  • Contributes to the teamwork within and between departments and organizations.

    Minimum Knowledge and Skills required by the Job

  • BS/MS degree in chemistry/ biochemistry/ pharmacology or any closely related field, and previous lab experience in some of the skills required.

  • Staff will be trained to use the relevant techniques for in vivo studies, purification but previous experience with some of the following techniques would be advantageous.

  • Work requires resolving problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles. Work requires the ability to exchange information on factual matters, schedule appointments, keep accurate records of procedures in the lab and good communication skills with other team members.
