65054BRTitle:Research Assistant I- Frelinger LabDepartment:Medicine-Hematology/OncologyAutoReqId:65054BRStatus:Full-TimeStandard Hours per Week:40 Job Category:ResearchJob Posting Description:The position is located within the Center for Platelet Research Studies in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at Boston Children's Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. The Center undertakes cutting edge basic, translational, and clinical research related to platelets. Current major interests of the Center include 1) Identification of platelet function defects associated with severe bleeding in patients with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). 2) Evaluation of novel therapeutics in patients with ITP through monitoring changes in platelet function. 3) Investigation of changes in platelet function caused by reduced RUNX1 expression in patients with RUNX1-Familial Platelet Disorder. 4) Evaluation in Phase I, II and III clinical studies of novel therapeutics for sickle cell disease. 5) Evaluation of on- and off-target inhibition of platelet function as an explanation for bleeding in patients treated with FDA-approved drugs. 6) Investigation of platelet sub-types, identified by novel methods, in health and disease and their role in hemostasis, immunology, and inflammation.

This Research Assistant I will be responsible for:

  • Performing a variety of routine laboratory experiments and procedures, utilizing standard laboratory equipment, recording and checking results for completeness and accuracy. Typical protocols include:

  • Flow cytometric analysis of platelet surface glycoproteins and biomarkers of platelet function in samples of human or animal blood.

  • Analysis of platelet function by light transmission aggregometry, whole blood impedance aggregation, and thromboelastography.

  • Preparing materials for single- and multi-center clinical trials; ship and receive materials related to clinical trials.

  • Communication with clinical trial sites to coordinate shipping and receiving of patient samples.

  • Inventory supplies and alert supervisor to needs; process orders for supplies.

  • Prepare stock solutions and reagents.

  • Maintaining a complete and accurate laboratory notebook.

  • Attend courses in safety procedures for handling, storage and disposal of biohazardous, flammable, corrosive and toxic materials. Carry out all laboratory activities in compliance with applicable regulations and protocols.

  • Summarize data using basic statistical analyses and graphing techniques.

  • Attend courses, lectures and conferences to further own knowledge of research and laboratory techniques, consult with other researchers and technicians to exchange information.

To qualify, you must have:

  • Knowledge and skills typically acquired through recent completion of a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Biological Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or related discipline, preferably with a GPA of >3.5.

  • Extensive undergraduate hands-on research lab experience.

  • Willingness to work with animals and human tissues.

  • Strong organizational skills, work ethic, ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to follow multi-step protocols and standard operating procedures.

  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team, in a productive, goal-oriented manner.

  • Willingness to commit to two years.

Proven interest (and ideally hands-on experience) in several of the following areas would be a plus: flow cytometry, microscopy, data analysis using Excel, GraphPad Prism, SAS, SPSS, R or similar, and cell culture.
