Tufts Medicine Public Safety Supervisor, Lieutenant in Boston, Massachusetts

​This role focuses on preventing workplace accidents and promotes health and safety awareness and education to individuals within the organization. In addition, this role focuses on performing the following Associate Safety related duties: Prevents workplace accidents and promotes health and safety awareness and education for employees. A management role that supervises employees focusing on tactical, operational activities within a specified area, with the majority of time spent overseeing area of responsibility, planning, prioritizing and/or directing the responsibilities of employees. Goal achievement is typically accomplished through performance of direct and/or indirect reports. A role that supervises para-professional employees. Responsibilities that typically include: Setting day-to-day operational objectives for team, problems faced may be difficult but typically are not complex, and ensures policies, practices and procedures are understood and followed by direct reports, customers and stakeholders.

Job Overview

This position is responsible for the day-to-day protection and safety of patients, staff and visitors; as well as the security of hospital assets and information. Works cooperatively within the department and with other hospital departments to create a system of quality health care.

Shift: Day Shift, Full time

Weekends and Holidays required

Location: Tufts Medical Center

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent.

  2. Security or First Responder certifications such as CPR/AED, CPI NCI, AVADE, MOAB, MDTS, Stop the Bleed, Nasal Naloxone Certifications, and Hazmat.

  3. Five (5) years of security operations experience with three (3) years of hospital-based experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or Graduate of Police Academy.

  2. Previous Military or Law Enforcement experience.

  3. Ability to become licensed as a Special State Police Officer pursuant to MGL 22c Section 63.

  4. Prior supervisory experience.

Duties and Responsibilities : The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.

  1. Sets a positive example by being present and creating and maintaining a productive and cooperative working atmosphere – with daily communication to all staff. Holds all direct reports accountable to all hospital and departmental standards of performance.

  2. Ensures new employees receive hospital and departmental orientation in a timely manner, including mandatory certifications. Ensures all personnel are educated on all new and existing policies and procedures. Responsible for the organization and creation of all training materials and guidelines. Completes “restraint basics” and levels of intervention policy training directly with all new personnel, and then again will all personnel on an annual basis.

  3. Ensures all personnel are educated on all new and existing policies, procedures, standards, and expectations. Develops continuing education requirements and competencies for all personnel.

  4. Coordinates all required learning and ensures active certification is maintained in all programs such as BLS Certification, FEMA IS 100, 200, 700 and 800, etc.

  5. Reviews all Safety Reports and daily activity logs on a daily basis and takes the appropriate follow up actions.

  6. Conducts timely investigations as needed and reviews/retains all necessary surveillance video in an organized database, to include all patient restraint-related surveillance captured on video.

  7. Coordinates monthly and annual fire equipment inspections. Manages all aspects of fire equipment regulatory compliance on campus, and all applicable off sites.

  8. Proactively enforces all hospital policies and organizes department enforcement efforts, with major emphasis placed on ID badge, Tobacco Free and parking enforcement, as well as security officer accountability for this job responsibility.

  9. Carries out quality inspections to ensure all duties are being performed by security officers on all shifts, including patrols, door checks, work order requests, lock ups / unlocks, policy enforcement, identification badge production, fire prevention rounds, extinguisher / hose inspections, Lost & Found, etc.

  10. Operates all security systems including surveillance, electronic controlled access, intrusion alarms, panic alarms, infant security, and identification badging, etc. Assures all applicable security personnel are adequately trained operators of these systems.

  11. Provides all security personnel with positive reinforcement and constructive feedback designed to enhance performance. Makes suggestions to Manager and Director of Security, and provides regular feedback about campus operations. Reports all concerns in a timely fashion.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Professional office environment with typical office requirements such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, etc.

  2. Frequently required to speak, hear, communicate and exchange information.

  3. Available to respond to any emergency situation or need to commence an investigation after normal working hours, carry a pager or other notification devices.

  4. Able to see and read computers displays, read fine print, and/or normal type size print and distinguish letters, numbers and symbols.

  5. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

  6. Physically able to perform physical activities such as response to daily operations situations and emergency/disaster situations.

  7. Possibility of injury due to eviction of unauthorized persons, restraint of violent patients, arrests, etc.

  8. Exposure to various areas containing hazardous material and radioactive substances when performing patrols.

  1. Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  2. Ability to manage multiple priorities and communicate effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds.

  3. Ability to successfully complete all training requirements and courses established and/or provided by the department.

  4. Ability to multi-task and meet established deadlines.

  5. Ability to assess potentially dangerous situations quickly, make sound decisions based on the information present, and take appropriate action based on the information available.

  6. Skilled in emotional maturity, dependability, punctuality, diplomacy and tact with poise and self- confidence devoid of negative remarks.

  7. Must be trustworthy, helpful, friendly, courteous and disciplined.

  8. Ability to read and write at a proficient level.

  9. Basic Computer Skills.
