Tufts Medicine Chair of Neurology in Boston, Massachusetts

Tufts Medical Center and Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts, are seeking a Chair of Neurology to lead the three missions of patient care, research and education for our neurology department and to serve as the academic leader across our hospital network. This Chair will play a pivotal leadership role in growing and shaping the strategy and operations of our newly created system-wide Neurosciences Service Line. The Tufts Medical Center Neurology Chair reports directly to the Dean/Chief Academic Officer and President of the Faculty Practice.

The Chair of Neurology will be responsible for advancing the strategic vision for Tufts Medical Center’s neurology programs, and building and integrating the neurology services across Tufts Medicine. In this role they will coordinate and collaborate with the leaders of the related services, supporting strategic imperatives of the academic mission within our system including basic and clinical research, undergraduate and graduate medical education, and faculty development.

The Chair of Neurology will promote the continual assessment of health equity across the Department of Neurology and the Tufts Medicine Neurosciences Service Line, and partner with an administrative leadership dyad to establish strategies and tactics that ensure equitable access for all populations and communities to neurology services at Tufts Medicine.

Working closely with clinical and operational leaders across Tufts Medicine, the Chair of Neurology will ensure Tufts Medicine remains at the forefront of alternative payment models and maintaining value added relationships with industry and payor partners. In doing so, the Chair of Neurology will lead the development of strategies that focus on continuous quality improvement, efficient clinical delivery, and maximizing patient value.

The Department of Neurology at Tufts Medical Center (TMC) is at the cutting edge of treating neurological diseases, uncovering their root causes, and training upcoming neurologists. Clinical services

Tufts Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases Program

  • Joint Commission-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center since 2018, with annual awards from AHA-ASA Get With The Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus – Target: Stroke Elite Honor Roll – Target: Stroke Advanced Therapy Honor Roll.

  • High thrombolysis and thrombectomy treatment volume facilitated by the Stroke & Emergency Consult (SEC) service, started in 2017 to address increasing acute stroke treatments and high complexity neurovascular consultations for other services (esp. cardiothoracic surgery, cardiomyopathy service, CCU, MICU, oncology, neurosurgery).

  • Close collaborations in acute stroke transfers from Tufts Medicine network hospitals MelroseWakefield Hospital (TJC certified Acute Stroke Ready Hospital) and Lowell General Hospital-Lowell Saints Hospital (DPH Primary Stroke Service Hospital), as well as regional partners (MetroWest Medical Center, Lawrence General Hospital)

  • Neurocardiology PFO Clinic with world experts in patent foramen ovale

  • Stroke and Young Adults (SAYA) Program, originating site of the SAYA U.S. National Consortium, started in 2015 to advance the care of young adults with stroke, especially in the post-acute care phase with longitudinal follow-up and management of late complications after stroke.

  • Tufts Late Presenter Thrombolysis protocol, only hospital in Massachusetts to regularly treat patients with IV thrombolytics beyond 4.5 hours

  • SEASONINGS (Safe Eating After Stroke Organized Nutrition Including Nasogastric Tubes and GastrostomieS) initiative and Greater Boston consortium – multidisciplinary pathways addressing post-stroke dysphagia (with collaborations with Surgery, Speech Language Pathology, Emergency Medicine, and Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities).

Tufts Epilepsy Program

  • Level 4 NAEC National Association of Epilepsy Centers (highest level in US News and World Reports) accredited program with board certified epileptologists and neurosurgeons and staff along with trained nurses, EEG technologists and allied professionals whose goals are to provide comprehensive care for the epilepsy patient offering both medical and surgical approaches to best practices along the continuum of care.

  • State of the art array of inpatient and outpatient EEG testing and seizure monitoring for our patients throughout the Tufts Medicine system, vagal nerve stimulation, responsive neurostimulation and resective surgeries including minimally invasive procedures in collaboration with neurosurgery.

  • Emphasis on appropriate individualized care, collaborative care for women with epilepsy throughout pre-pregnancy planning, pregnancy, labor, and delivery.

Tufts Neuromuscular Program

  • Program lead by Neuromuscular experts with ABEM or ABNM certification, with capability to diagnose and manage general neuromuscular medicine, peripheral neuropathy, myopathies, NMT disorders and ALS.

  • State of the art AANEM-Certified EMG lab, with ability to perform standard NCS, EMG, SFEMG, advanced nerve conduction studies, motor, and somatosensory evoked potentials, QST studies, skin biopsy for assessment of small fiber neuropathy.

  • Special clinical programs:

  • Facial Nerve clinic: in collaboration with ENT and NS

  • Transthyretin Amyloidosis: in collaboration with NS, Cardiology, Hematology and NS.

Tufts Movement Disorder Program

  • Dedicated board-certified specialist the “Best of Boston” every year since 2019 very positively recognized by patients.

  • Access to the entire spectrum of care including botulinum toxin treatments and DBS programming

  • Access to clinical research Asian Population.

Tufts Cognitive Neurology Program

  • Expert cognitive neurology specialists and neuropsychology services for diagnosis and management of cognitive conditions.

  • The Tufts Medicine Neuroscience Service Line is also developing a Tufts Medicine wide comprehensive Memory Care Center that will integrate clinical care and research and provide assessment and treatment of individuals with neurocognitive disorders and support for their families. The Memory Care Center will include an interdisciplinary memory clinic, an Alzheimer’s Therapeutic Program for the delivery of disease modifying therapeutics and a collaborative care program for holistic dementia care in primary care and specialty care settings.

Tufts Neurocritical Care Program

  • 8-bed Neurocritiical Care Unit with a semi-closed model in collaboration with Neurosurgery.

Tufts Neurology Inpatient Care

  • Multiple inpatient neurology services including the Sabin Service (Inpatient Neurology), Stroke and Emergency Consult (SEC) service, and Neuro-Oncology consult service

  • Wide range of acute and complex neurological pathologies, including cerebrovascular diseases (ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, RCVS, vasculitis, etc.), neuromuscular disorders (AIDP/GBS, myasthenic crises), demyelinating diseases (MS, neuromyelitis optica, MOG-spectrum disorder, etc.), autoimmune encephalitis, refractory epilepsy, and more.

  • Highly trained team of inpatient Advanced Practice Practitioners (APPs) supporting the attendings, fellows, and residents on the inpatient services.

Research

Our researchers are recognized as leaders in the field, with expertise in neuromuscular disorders, stroke, dementia, neuro-oncology, movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and seizure disorders. Some highlights of our research programs include, but are not limited to:

  • Access to multiple clinical trials and registries across all divisions

  • Access to NIH and industry sponsored research projects

  • Participation in Research Consotoium for stroke: Stroke and Young Adults (SAYA) U.S. Consortium, with TMC as the organizing site (among 10 academic medical centers including Stanford, Columbia, MGH, University of Maryland, University of Colorado, University of Southern Carolina, etc.)

Education

The mission of the Tufts Medical Center Neurology Residency Program is to train superior clinical neurologists who will succeed in their professional lives in any endeavor they choose, whether it's patient care, research or teaching. The location of our institutions and the experience of our staff give residents exposure to the full spectrum of neurologic problems. Our residents gain extensive experience in community neurology and outpatient clinical settings while also receiving exposure to our traditional strengths of tertiary care and neurologic intensive care.

Our training programs include:

  • Neurology Residency Program - Highly competitive advanced training program with 7 residents/year, 21 residents total

  • Neuro-Critical Care Fellowship

  • Vascular Neurology Fellowship
