Boston University ASSISTANT PROVOST FOR EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION, Associate Provost of Undergrad. Affairs in BOSTON, Massachusetts

The Assistant Provost for Experiential Education oversees units within the Provosts Office that provide experiential learning opportunities to undergraduates and coordinates experiential learning opportunities offered across the university (e.g., through undergraduate schools and colleges, academic centers, Global Programs). The Assistant Provost for Experiential Education will oversee BUs Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, the Learning Assistants Program, the Office of National and International Scholarships and Fellowships, and the Trustee Scholars Program, and will provide guidance and support to the faculty directors of BUs Living Learning Communities. The Assistant Provost will also convene, on a regular basis, representatives from the school/colleges and other university units to share best practices and to maximize opportunities for collaboration and efficiency in operations with respect to the broad array of experiential learning opportunities at BU. The Assistant Provost for Experiential Education is a member of the Undergraduate Affairs Team in the Office of the Provost and reports to the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Affairs.

Essential Function 1: (40%) Oversee experiential learning programs housed within the Office of the Provost, including the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, the Office of National and International Scholarships and Fellowships, and the Learning Assistants Program. Work with the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Affairs and the Office of Development and Alumni Relations and external funding sources to increase funding for these programs. Ensure equity in opportunities for participation among all undergraduates.

Essential Function 2: (20%) Support the Trustees Scholars Program and BUs Living Learning Communities (currently, Global House, Earth House, Lavender House). Work closely with faculty directors of these program and with the Dean of Students Office to enhance academic and co-curricular programming associated with BUs Living Learning Communities. Oversee ongoing evaluation of the living-learning community frameworks and work collaboratively with the Dean of Students and Vice President of Auxiliary Services on the development of new living-learning communities.

Essential Function 3: (30%) Work with representatives from all of BUs schools and colleges, as well as other university-wide academic centers and units, to develop a clear network of experiential learning opportunities at BU, to increase the number of experiential learning opportunities available to BU undergraduates, to foster communication and collaboration where appropriate, to create greater operational efficiency, and to ensure equity of access for students.

Essential Function 4: (5%) Collaborate with the Assistant Provost for General Education to expand experiential learning opportunities within the BU Hub, Boston University's General Education program.

Essential Function 5: (5%) Special Projects. Under the direction of the Associate Provost for Undergraduate Affairs, support emerging initiatives that facilitate undergraduate students' engagement with high-impact educational practices.

Required Skills

  • Masters Degree (Doctoral Degree highly preferred)

  • 12+ years of work experience, preferably in a higher education setting

  • understanding of how research universities are structured and ability to collaborate with a wide range of constituents, including students, faculty, and staff

  • understanding of the national landscape of experiential education and familiarity with relevant literature and best practices

  • excellent leadership and managerial skills, including a demonstrated ability to lead new initiatives

  • strong interpersonal communication skills, including excellent writing, editing skills, and presentation skills

  • time-management and multi-tasking skills, along with the ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • ability to work with constituents of diverse identities from a range of backgrounds and enthusiasm for increasing opportunities in experiential learning for historically underrepresented groups ability to build and oversee strategic plans and budgets
