The College of Arts & Sciences Office of Faculty Actions (OFA) provides critical support to over 700 full-time faculty members, as well as part-time teaching faculty and academic researchers, throughout their careers at Boston University. From hiring and orientation to retirement, OFA manages all aspects of the faculty life cycle, including professional development, tenure, promotion, sabbaticals, and leaves of absence. Working closely with the four associate deans for the faculty, the Dean of CAS, and the CAS Business Office, OFA collaborates with departments to address faculty affairs matters and provides individualized advice to faculty members. We are seeking an Assistant Director to join our dynamic, fast-paced office.
The Assistant Director of Faculty Actions will play a key role in managing administrative processes for part-time faculty and academic researchers across the College of Arts & Sciences. This role involves overseeing faculty employment actions, analyzing salary equity, and ensuring compliance with the SEIU L509 part-time faculty union. The Assistant Director will also lead orientation activities for new faculty, provide training to departmental staff, and develop CAS policies and procedures related to faculty actions. The position requires close collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Faculty Actions, the Director of Faculty Actions, and other senior leadership, including the Associate Deans and the Dean of CAS. Additionally, the Assistant Director will supervise the Senior Program Coordinator and help maintain faculty-focused technology systems.
Key Responsibilities
Part-Time Faculty and Researcher Administration
Review initial appointments, reappointments, changes of status, and leaves of absence for part-time lecturers and academic researchers. Ensure accuracy and completeness of records; flag any issues requiring Associate Dean intervention. Establish and maintain policies and procedures for part-time lecturers and academic researchers. Compliance and Union Relations Oversee SEIU L509 union compliance for part-time faculty. Monitor misconduct policies and ensure adherence across the part-time and researcher populations.
Data Management and Technology Systems
Respond to data requests and generate analytical reports related to part-time faculty and academic researchers. Collaborate with CAS IT and BU IS&T to maintain faculty systems, including: OnBase electronic filing system. CASapps routing system. FileMaker Pro faculty actions database. Lead a project to digitize hard-copy faculty files. Faculty Orientation and Training Develop and oversee orientation programs for new faculty members. Train departmental staff on policies and procedures related to faculty actions.
Special Projects and Support
Assist the Director of Faculty Actions and Assistant Dean with special projects as needed. Serve as Secretary of the Faculty, attending CAS faculty meetings and preparing meeting minutes.
Required Skills
A cover letter is required for consideration.
Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree preferred.
Minimum 5 years of relevant experience.
An additional 35 years in higher education administration may substitute for a Master's degree.
Demonstrated experience with policy development, data analysis, and project management in an academic environment.
