Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs daily and routine road surface maintenance activities to keep the roadways and roadsides safe and in good repair according to MnDOT standards. An employee in this class assists in the maintenance and operation of snow and ice control to ensure safe and clear roadways, and performs related work as required. A position may not include all the work examples given, nor does the list include all that may be assigned.
Performs Roadway Maintenance and Roadside functions such as:
All activities required for roadside maintenance.
All roadway surface maintenance activities.
Services and makes minor repairs to operating equipment.
Provides traffic control.
Performs basic construction monitoring duties and basic inspection activities.
Other duties as required.
Performs Snow & Ice functions such as:
Maintain roadways for snow and ice control.
Prepare and inspects winter equipment.
Perform pre-season snow route inspection and performs post storm cleanup.
Perform winter stockpile setup and transfer of anti-icing and de-icing chemicals.
Perform all work related to installing, repairing, maintaining, and removing snow fences; replacing mailboxes.
Maintain documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
Perform traffic control set-ups and/or provides notification to dispatch of disabled vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications
Part 1:
A valid Class A or B Driver’s License with no air brake restriction is required at time of application and must obtain tanker endorsement within 30 days of hire. Must obtain valid Class A Driver’s License with no air brake restriction and tanker endorsement within 6 months of hire. License must by maintained throughout employment.
AND
One year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).
OR:
Education: Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (of at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits) will substitute for one year of experience. (In order for education coursework to be considered in lieu of work experience you must submit a copy of your transcripts).
AND
Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in-person or via two-way radio and other electronic devices; and to maintain routine written logs and simple records.
Part 2: Final candidate will receive contingent job offer and be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. The required passing score for the Math portion is a level 3 or higher and the Reading portion is a level 4 or higher. (Position is contingent on passing a math and reading assessment test.)
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous MnDOT experience working as a Laborer, Transportation Associate or Transportation Generalist

This position is contingent upon the selected job candidate having a valid Commercial Driver's License, submits to a Federal Department of Transportation Pre-employment drug test (with negative test results), is subject to future random drug and alcohol testing and is registered in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Commercial Driver's License Drug
and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
NOTE: The incumbent will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. New employees must pass a pre-placement drug test for evidence of use of marijuana, cocaine, opiates, phencyclidine (PCP) and amphetamines (MDMA, MDA and MDEA) and acetyl morphine (6-AM).
NOTE: A pre-placement physical examination is required for this position. Current employees who have successfully bid or are moving into specific job classifications will also be required to complete the pre-employment physical exam.
