Position description

The Emergency Department Technician will assist the ED/UC staff with specified procedures, complete defined procedures, assist with patient care and department traffic flow, transport patients and supplies, clean and stock the department and participate in departmental activities (educational, performance improvement and delegated information management).

This position will also cross-train to the Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) role:

  • Provides organizational, receptionist, and clerical support to patient care units and the health care team. These duties include monitoring and ordering supplies, and may also include transcribing orders to patient electronic medical record and other communication devices.

  • Communicates effectively via a variety of modalities with patients, visitors, and facility staff and plays an integral role in communication across the continuum of care.

  • Functions as a resource to members of the health care team and is familiar with multiple Mayo Clinic resources.

Qualifications

High School Diploma/GED required.

Additional qualifications

Minimum of 6 months acute healthcare experience preferred.

Previous ED experience preferred.

Successful completion of college, HUC vocational program preferred.

License or certification

Minnesota Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, EMT-B , EMT-I or EMT-P Certification preferred at time of hire, but required within 12 months of hire..

Maintains BLS (Basic Life Support) for Health Care Providers from one of the following programs:​

  1. American Heart Association

  2. American Red Cross

If a candidate does not currently have their Basic Life Support certification, it will be included as part of the orientation program.
