We are seeking a passionate HR Generalist to join our busy and growing team dedicated to fostering a collaborative and inclusive workplace culture. As an HR Generalist with us, you will play a crucial role in supporting our employees and contributing to our overall success.

This position performs professional human resources work for the Minnesota Zoo. The HR Generalist responsibilities include talent acquisition, classification and compensation, labor contract administration, employee and labor relations, assist with administration of leave of absence, FMLA, PPL, Drug and Alcohol Testing, workers compensation and unemployment insurance claims, employee training and development, records, reporting, and data systems management activities. Collaborates closely with HR and hiring managers to meet organizational and departmental needs and priorities. Contributes to a climate of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The position ensures that all human resource activities comply with state and federal laws and rules, administrative procedures and collective bargaining agreements and participates in bargaining as defined in M.S. 13.37.

Job duties include but not limited to:

  • Provide talent acquisition services ensuring hiring needs are met within established time frames, State policies and guidelines and Zoo procedures.

  • Provide talent management services to managers and supervisors ensuring appropriate job analysis, audit and classification and compensation placement in accordance with State standards.

  • Provide employee and labor relations services to managers, supervisors and employees so that employment related issues are resolved in a timely manner and the Zoo is in compliance with all related laws, bargaining unit agreements, personnel plans, policies and procedures.

  • Participate in HR projects and initiatives, such as employee engagement surveys, diversity and inclusion programs, and HR process improvement and technology implementations.

Minimum Qualifications

The following qualifications are required of all applicants seeking consideration for this position.   • Two (2) years of experience in a professional human resources position, which includes experience in recruitment and selection, classification and compensation, benefits and leave administration, or labor and employee relations. **Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Psychology, or closely related field may substitute for 1 year of professional Human Resources experience. Transcripts will be requested if invited to interview.

  • HR Knowledge: Understanding of HR principles, practices, and procedures, including employment law, benefits and leave administration, compensation structures, and recruitment.

  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, as HR Generalists often interact with employees at all levels and need to communicate policies and procedures clearly.

  • Organizational Skills: Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time efficiently, and handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously.

  • Problem-Solving: Capacity to analyze situations, identify issues, and propose solutions that align with organizational policies and legal requirements.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Effective interpersonal skills to build relationships with employees, managers, and external contacts.

  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse and inclusive working environment

  • Familiar with HRIS software and other HR-related technology platforms.Proficient in Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications

HR experience in a public sector and/or union environment.

  • HR experience in a public sector and/or union environment.

  • Professional HR certification such as PHR, SHRM-CP or IPMA-CP.

  • Previous project management experience.

Physical Requirements

This position requires occasional lifting and/or carrying such articles as file folders, ledgers and small tools. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties.
