This position exists to provide additional support to the custodial staff at the Minnesota Zoo. This position is responsible for cleaning and maintaining assigned restrooms and public and nonpublic areas, picking up trash, emptying and cleaning trash and recycling containers and performing other assigned cleaning tasks to help ensure a clean, comfortable, healthy, safe and attractive environment for guests and staff. The incumbent may be required to operate fleet vehicles throughout the campus.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Perform daily cleaning of assigned restrooms and other areas to ensure a clean, safe and inviting environment for guests and staff;

  • Perform general grounds maintenance as assigned to ensure a clean, safe and inviting environment for guests and staff; and

  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure the smooth functioning of the department.

Minimum Qualifications

These are full time temporary positions with anticipated dates of 5/7 through November 1.

Knowledge of:

  • Different types of flooring/floor covering sufficient to determine proper methods of maintenance and appropriate cleaning methods, materials, agents and equipment,

  • Chemical cleaning agents such as ammonia, bleaches, scouring agents and soaps sufficient to appropriately select the agent(s), handle and apply, and dispose of safely,

  • Methods, tools, and equipment used in maintenance sufficient to use effectively and operate safely and to make minor repairs.

Ability to:

  • Follow simple oral and written instructions,

  • Perform assigned tasks with limited work direction,

  • Keep simple records,

  • Valid driver’s license - unrestricted Class D Driver‘s License with a clear driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience performing basic restroom cleaning,

  • Customer service skills sufficient to provide prompt, courteous and accurate information to staff and guests with courtesy, respect and an interest in positive problem solving, and

  • Must have basic computer skills in data entry and word processing to complete record keeping tasks.

Physical Requirements

  • Physical health and endurance sufficient to perform work functions:

  • Ability to frequently move up to 84 pounds,

  • Ability to frequently bend, stoop, crouch, kneel, stretch, reach upward, and have good lateral movement,

  • Ability to perform tasks requiring heavy use of arms, wrists, and exertion of upper body, arms and hands to perform duties.

  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks such as pulling garbage out of a 50 gallon container or cleaning glass with your arms overhead for a period of time,

  • Ability to perform large amount of walking and walk up and down stairs in order to remove trash,

  • May occasionally be exposed to loud noises of landscaping and grounds keeping equipment,

  • May occasionally be exposed to chemicals which may have a scent that is objectionable and/or noxious in nature.

Additional Requirements

This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s license with a clear driving record.
