The Board of Water and Soil Resources (BWSR) is the state soil and water conservation agency and administers programs that prevent sediment and nutrients from entering our lakes, rivers, and streams; enhance fish and wildlife habitat; and protect wetlands. The 20-member board consists of representatives of local and state government agencies and citizens.

This position exists to develop, plan and execute statewide Conservation marketing efforts, campaigns, and programs. It is part of the Organizational Effectiveness Section. The position provides consultation to agency professionals and outside partners on communication efforts with statewide impact to coordinate and manage conservation communication activities.

Minimum Qualifications

The posting is being used to fill one (1) position in one (1) of the following locations: St. Paul, Bemidji, Brainerd, Detroit Lakes, Duluth, Mankato, Marshall, St Cloud, or Rochester. Location is negotiable upon hire.

· Bachelor's degree in communications, English, Journalism, or related field.

· Communications experience in government

· Five years of professional experience writing, editing, and producing journalistic style articles using AP style Guidelines

· Knowledge of conservation and natural resource science topics and future/current developments occurring in Minnesota sufficient to lead development of conservation communications and strategies.

· Understanding of Minnesota’s natural resource and conservation delivery systems sufficient to apply knowledge to project activities.

· General knowledge of Minnesota’s physical features, population distribution, and cultures to understand attitudes toward agriculture and natural resources is critical.

· Experience using advanced digital media management and analytics so that digital communications effectively deliver messages to desired audiences.

· Experience with principles of communications and marketing tactics to develop and implement successful outreach campaigns furthering the public’s knowledge of conservation in Minnesota.

· Knowledge of Federal and State Grant Funding sources for conservation projects

· Experience using social media platforms and digital content delivery sufficient to recommend correct tools and delivery methods to accomplish goals of various communications efforts.

· Experience using InDesign, and Adobe Premiere Pro

Preferred Qualifications

· 5-7 years of experience writing natural resource/conservation related content for newspapers, magazines and other media outlets.

· Basic knowledge of BWSR policies sufficient to make program decisions and understand methods of conducting business, including working with contractors.

Physical Requirements

Requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes and heavy hand tools or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. This position will require regularly working outdoors in wet, humid, hot or cold weather, and walking over uneven terrain. Even though the weights being lifted may only be a negligible amount, a job is in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with a degree of pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.

Additional Requirements

This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s License with a clear driving record.
