This position exists to conduct specialized, professional activities for the meat inspection program’s slaughter training, humane handling audits and as a back-up for conducting carcass dispositions. This position is responsible as a veterinarian to coordinate and execute project activities for drug residue prevention. They will need to coordinate with other program staff, management, with the Board of Animal Health, and the MN Department of Health on current and emerging animal disease issues. This position requires significant veterinary expertise, especially related to animal health, food safety, public health, veterinary drug use, and other stewardship practices; as such, the individual in this position must be a veterinarian.

This position is a remote worker position which is defined as, an employee who, as a condition of their appointment, has their home or alternative location as the assigned work location, works permanently from that location, and does not have an agency permanent/principal work location. Currently the MDA does not allow remote work locations outside of the State of Minnesota. The locations for this remote worker position include the following counties: Anoka, Benton, Brown, Carver, Chisago, Dakota, Goodhue, Hennepin, Isanti, Kanabec, Kandiyohi, Le Sueur, McLeod, Meeker, Ramsey, Rice, Scott, Sherburne, Sibley, Stearns, Waseca, Washington, & Wright.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree (D.V.M. or equivalent)

  • A license to practice veterinary medicine in Minnesota, or be eligible to obtain licensure within 6 months of hire

  • Two years of experience in public health practice, food safety related fields, teaching and outreach or other public health fields

  • Must have a valid driver's license and an acceptable motor vehicle record subject to review

  • The ability to celebrate diversity and a strong commitment to a respectful and inclusive work environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Master’s Degree in Public Health

  • Experience conducting food safety inspections

  • Experience conducting Humane Handling Audits in a regulatory environment

  • Experience conducting outreach or training with the agricultural industry

  • Experience in networking and collaboration to achieve shared goals

  • Experience working independently from direct supervision, as a remote worker, or in a position that requires individual interactions with clients in the field in a customer service or regulatory capacity

Physical Requirements

The work requires prolonged standing on wet concrete or barn floors for approximately 30% of the time, and the incumbent will travel across the State of Minnesota to complete inspections, farm visits, outreach and other work activities in a variety of work environments. Accurate color vision is essential to allow the veterinarian to notice subtle shades of product color and to make appropriate product acceptability decisions. The ability to hear conversational voice is required to communicate effectively with supervisors, workers, and industry personnel in this environment. In addition, the work requires the ability to detect product abnormalities through smell.
