As the Data Analysis Unit Supervisor, the position provides leadership to the unit to ensure it serves as a center of excellence for data analysis and management at the MPCA. This includes developing, improving, and supervising systems and business processes to provide efficient, effective, and economical delivery of services to support agency data analysis and management so that staff, Minnesota residents, and partners can access quality data to inform sound decision making. The position supervises and directs staff who conduct research projects and analyses that provide high-level decision support to senior agency management for statewide regulatory, environmental, and organizational performance evaluation and improvement. This position promotes leadership in the integration of advanced analysis and visualization methods into agency programs to support strategic plan goals and program needs through analysis and presentation of data. The staff supervised by this position is instrumental in providing agency information for legislative evaluations and conducts evaluations for new programs and/or for areas with little or no procedural precedent.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of supervisory experience in environmental protection/pollution control/public health, OR

Two years of advanced professional experience in environmental protection/pollution control/public health. Examples for internal candidates – (Environmental Specialist 4, Planner Principal, Hydrologist 2, Engineer 2 Graduate, Research Scientist 2, or related classes), OR

Three years of professional level experience in directing, designing or developing criteria and/or data for permits, enforcement, negotiation, or environmental or data analysis

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of database query principles and various tools for data processing, analysis, visualization and reporting (i.e., Tableau data analysis and visualization).

Skills in applying data modeling and business analysis knowledge to assess the usability of data from specific inquiries.

Ability to guide staff in problem solving while providing an environment that fosters risk-taking, learning and innovation.

Ability to work with ease between various levels of the organization from line staff to executive leadership.

Ability to successfully recruit, retain, and develop staff.

Ability to work effectively with federal, state and local partners and with a variety of stakeholder groups.

Accomplished project management skills to guide and direct a number of complex data development and services projects while supporting staff and problem solving laterally and vertically to determine appropriate actions.

Experience working with and fostering diversity in the workplace.
