National Grid is hiring a Senior Energy Engineer for our New York Customer Energy Management (CEM) department in Syracuse, NY, Albany, NY, Brooklyn, NY or Long Island, NY.

This is a Hybrid Role - Must live within a commutable distance to one of those locations

Job Purpose

The Residential Energy Efficiency (EE) Senior Energy Engineer provides technical analysis, guidance, and leadership to support the design and development of new products and services, and strategic portfolio planning, for EE and heat electrification/heat pump offerings for residential customers. Over time, this role may expand to support other offerings and customer sectors such as multifamily buildings. The Senior Energy Engineer will be a member of the Residential Category Team in the CEM department for National Grid’s gas and electric utility companies in New York state.

Key Accountabilities

  • Engineering subject matter expert for energy-efficient technologies that reduce customer gas and/or electric usage and support achievement of NY State’s climate goals with a focus on weatherization and heat electrification (e.g., air source heat pumps, ground source heat pumps, hybrid fossil/electric heat pumps, etc.)

  • Provides technical support, guidance, and validation for the development of new EE program offerings and capabilities, as well as maintaining existing offerings, such as developing and updating gross energy savings calculations, performing analyses to support development and maintenance of EE program offerings, and strategic portfolio planning

  • Effectively interprets and applies methodologies, requirements, and calculations from the NY Technical Resource Manual (TRM), industry studies from NYSERDA and other sources, and program evaluation, measurement, and verification (EM&V) studies to the development and maintenance of residential EE program offerings

  • Supports and participates in NY TRM, Clean Heat, and other technical working groups with National Grid staff and representatives from other NY utilities, including proposing technical changes, reviewing and providing input on proposed technical changes, communicating changes to internal teams and stakeholders, and updating National Grid’s residential EE and heat electrification offerings to incorporate approved technical changes

  • Actively monitors the external product and technology landscape in specified technical domains with an eye towards promising technologies, approaches, and partners and communicates these developments to internal teams for review

  • Supports Product Owners and Program Managers in the execution of prioritized customer offerings to develop with a focus on validating technical aspects of emerging product offerings, as well as evaluating product viability from a technical and customer use-case perspective

  • Works closely with internal and external EM&V functions and other National Grid engineering teams to evaluate and apply emerging technologies or process improvements to develop new offerings and improve existing offerings for customers

  • Collaborates with other internal and external teams and stakeholders to provide technical expertise and knowledge sharing to meet business needs

Qualifications

Knowledge and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering field, preferably energy, environmental, electrical, or mechanical engineering

  • Five or more years of relevant, professional experience

  • Working knowledge of the electric and gas utility industry, energy efficiency program planning, design, implementation and evaluation; local, state, and federal laws, regulations; energy and building codes; and appliance and equipment energy standards

  • Experience defining technical assumptions, estimating costs, and performing calculations to measure savings from energy conservation and demand management measures

  • Experience performing energy engineering studies (e.g., energy audits, etc.), creating energy models, and/or relevant energy and economic analysis

  • Working knowledge of product management and product lifecycle management best practices and industry standards

  • Experience with identifying external partnership opportunities and developing and executing on mutually beneficial partnership arrangements with external market participants, including technology providers and consultants

  • Ability to analyze customer data to derive new solutions. Analyze several datasets and case study results to inform design decisions utilizing energy engineering knowledge, technical methodologies and engineering best practices. This may include testing of technologies or scenarios to inform the best ways for EE program growth, optimization and expansion

  • Technology screenings involving engineering-grade analysis to vet for feasibility

  • Development of energy savings calculations and performing benefit-cost analyses

  • After analyzing data, ability to see multiple relationships, identifying several likely causes or consequences of EE program results

Knowledge and Experience Preferences:

  • Professional Engineer license

  • Relevant trainings and certifications from industry-leading organizations such as AEE, BPI, and ASHRAE

  • Familiarity with demand side management as a tool in reducing natural gas and electric demand in buildings during peak system hours, as well as how these peak reductions can mitigate gas and electric network constraints to meet system needs

  • Familiarity with the NY TRM and/or other states’ standard approach for estimating energy savings

  • Familiarity with industry standards for assessing cost-effectiveness of EE resources such as benefit-cost analyses, avoided cost of energy/infrastructure, and avoided cost of carbon

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with technical and non-technical audiences

  • Ability to self-direct and problem solve

Salary

$101,000 - $119,000 a year - Syracuse or Albany, NY

$122,000 - $143,000 a year - Brooklyn or LI, NY

Salary commensurate with location and experience
