Albany Medical Center Research Technician in Albany, New York

Department/Unit:

Neuroscience & Experimental Therapeutic

Work Shift:

Day (United States of America)

Salary Range: $18.00 - $23.79

The Shin lab in the Department of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics at Albany Medical College, Albany NY, is accepting applications for a NIH-funded laboratory research technician position. The successful candidate will join an enthusiastic and productive team aimed at investigating how neural circuits are altered in spinocerebellar ataxia type1 (SCA1) and identify brain areas for neuromodulation as a therapeutic strategy. SCA1 is a progressive, debilitating and fatally inherited neurodegenerative disease. The project will employ a SCA1 mouse model undergoing treadmill testing to assess changes in gait performance in a longitudinal study design. In vivo electrophysiological recordings are obtained to reveal how communication in various brain areas contribute to SCA1 motor symptomology with findings informing us on best practice to deliver deep brain stimulation to improve gait dysfunction. Lastly, immunocytochemistry of post-mortem tissue will unmask changes in brain morphology linked to SCA1 pathology and with therapeutic intervention.

The Candidate

Interested applicants should have at least a BS in Neuroscience, Biomedical Sciences, Physiology or other related discipline(s). The person should also be highly motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a team. Surgical expertise (e.g., stereotaxic implants of recording/stimulating electrodes), behavior testing expertise, managing mouse colonies, genotyping and/or a background in ataxia, and electrophysiology are not required but would be beneficial.
