The Radiation Therapy Clinical Specialist will directly assist the Department Manager in planning and organizing the activities of the technical section of the Radiation Oncology Department to ensure provision of safe, cost effective, quality radiation therapy services. Performs simulations and delivers therapeutic ionizing radiation to the patient as prescribed by the Radiation Oncologists. Assists the physician and fellow employees in providing optimum care and treatment to the patients.

Plan, organize, and oversee the operations of the simulation and treatment units in cooperation with the Therapist Staff. Ensure proper standards are maintained related to the delivery of radiation treatments, patient wait times, and proper follow-up. Assist in orienting/training new radiation therapists in clinical responsibilities. Assist Manager in obtaining stats/reports as needed. Assist in charge code reconciliation when requested. Assist Manager with preparation for accreditations and/or inspections. Assists Manager in developing and updating policies and procedures. Assists Manager with input regarding performance evaluations and corrective action. Assist patient in all aspects related to simulation and treatment and is responsible for their safety. Observes at all times, rules and regulations relative to radiation safety for patients, staff, students and other personnel. Responsible for recording and reporting equipment faults to chief therapist and/or physicist. Accurately sets treatment doses and monitors the progress of treatment. Maintains adequate records/documentation as requested. Carries out regular quality assurance checks, as required daily, weekly and/or monthly. Assists the physician in any procedure related to simulation, planning or treatment as needed. Inspects or delegates inspection of ancillary equipment on a regular basis, reporting and removing any unsafe equipment from use. Rotates shift, On Call coverage or work assignments as requested by Department Manager. Follows guidelines set in AMC Human Resources Manual. Will be a role model in demonstrating clinical assessment, interpretive and treatment delivery skills. Will demonstrate leadership by overseeing radiation therapists in the department and be responsible for ensuring competency of radiation therapy team through training. You will be responsible for facilitating essential communication to department manager or Chief Physicist, and Department Administrator or Chair when appropriate, regarding operational issues. You will work with manager to conduct regularly scheduled technical meetings no less than once per quarter as well as participating in department quality assurance initiatives. Maintains and develops interests in the field of Radiation Oncology and sharing new concepts with staff. Maintains required Continuing Education credits in compliance with license registration requirements.

Communication Skills Informs patient of simulation and treatment procedures and observes the patient’s condition throughout the course of treatment. Reports any changes in condition to the physician and/or nursing staff. Participates in regular therapist and staff meetings. Acts as mentor/provides clinical guidance to Radiation Therapy students in Radiation Oncology. Clearly documents patient related information in electronic medical record.
