Albany Medical Center Pier Diem Forensic Nurse Examiner in Albany, New York

The Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) demonstrates performance consistent with professional forensic nursing standards of practice, care, and performance, the Nurse Practice Act and the mission and goals of the organization. Provides forensic nursing services for all victims of violence/abuse/neglect. Is responsible for collecting and preserving forensic evidence while maintaining the chain of custody. Performs forensic examinations for the purpose of forensic injury identification and documentation. Works collaboratively to meet the acute needs of primary and secondary forensic patients by making appropriate patient referrals through identification and coordination of services throughout the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Be on-call and work irregular hours due to the nature of program.

  • Work in an emotionally charged field with a variety of professional and paraprofessional personnel with patience and sensitivity.

  • Prioritize tasks and work effectively with complex tasks under pressure/time restraints/irregular schedules

  • Maintain confidential patient information

  • Maintain chain of custody for records, photographs, and forensic specimens

  • Understand and comply with mandatory reporting requirements for incidents of abuse and neglect

  • Testify in court when needed.

  • Provide care appropriate to meet the age and cultural needs of the patients served.

  • Demonstrate ability to assess data/interpret appropriate information needed to identify each patient’s requirements relative to age specific needs as well as clinical indications

  • Provide direct nursing and forensic care forensic patients.

  • Perform assessment, reassessment, and monitoring of patients

  • Recognize the medical, legal, and social responsibilities in caring for forensic patients

  • Complete various state forms as required by law.

  • Facilitate the patient’s choice to prosecute by providing support and referrals to the criminal justice system.

  • Identify resources and make referrals for health care and long-term therapy needs for the forensic patients as needed.

  • Serve as a resource for health care providers in the coordination and management for the care of primary and secondary forensic patients.

  • Assist with the coordination of training opportunities for new forensic nurse examiners and other medical professionals.

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing Completion of a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner course in accordance with the International Association of Forensic Nurses Education Guidelines - required

  • 1-3 years of recent acute care clinical experience as a registered nurse - required

  • Fundamental nursing theories and current clinical concepts of care.

  • Principles of growth and development.

  • Disease processes and related treatments/care/medications.

  • Diagnostic/therapeutic procedures and interventions.

  • Assessments, treatments and medications related to forensic patients.

  • Work effectively and cooperatively with a multidisciplinary team composed of professionals and paraprofessional persons from various community agencies.

  • Communicate orally and in writing in a concise and easily understandable manner, including patient documentation, and in interactions with other agencies.

  • Prioritize tasks and work effectively with complex tasks under pressure/time restraints/irregular schedules.

  • Maintain confidential patient information.

  • Clinical forensic nursing patient assessment and the use of equipment/instruments relevant to forensic patient care.

  • Effective interpersonal communication and team skills which include listening, and interviewing techniques with patients, families, and staff.

  • Problem solving techniques, critical thinking skills, and decision making.

  • RN - Registered Nurse - State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure Upon Hire - required

  • BCLS - Basic Life Support Upon Hire - required

  • NYS SAFE Certification Upon Hire - required

  • SANE-A - Sexual Assault Nurse Exam Adult Upon Hire - preferred

  • SANE-P - Sexual Assault Nurse Exam Pediatric Upon Hire - preferred

  • TNCC - Trauma Nursing Core Course Upon Hire - preferred

  • ENPC - Emergency Nursing Pediatric Certification Upon Hire - preferred

  • PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support Upon Hire - preferred
