The successful candidate must have a medical coding credential through AHIMA or AAPC to apply.
Responsibilities:
Optimize hospital reimbursement by collecting and classifying diagnostic and procedural information from physicians and medical records.
Code diagnostic and operative information from the record using ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT4 classification systems. Use a computerized encoding system to facilitate accurate coding. Sequence diagnoses and procedures by following the ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT4, Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set (UHDDS), Medicare, Medicaid and other fiscal intermediary guidelines.
Select Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) for each inpatient case. Optimize hospital payment legitimately and ethically, based on approved coding guidelines and conventions.
Select APG or APC for each outpatient cases
Abstract medical data from the record to complete a discharge data abstract (DDA) on each inpatient, emergency department and ambulatory surgery episode.
Complete/verify diagnostic, demographic and SPARCS information for submission to New York State Office of Health Systems Management (OHSM).
Enter patient information into computerized inpatient and outpatient medical record databases. Ensure accuracy and integrity of medical record abstract data prior to billing interface and claims submission.
Maintains the confidentiality of patient clinical and financial information.
Participates in training as required.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Credentials as CCS, CPC or eligible required. Preferred RHIT or RHIA with Associate Degree in Health Information Technology or related field. Minimum 2 to 4 years coding experience OR 1 – 3 years coding experience as a Coder I in HIM.
Excellent communication skills.
Excellent command of the ICD-10-CM/PCS and CPT4 classification systems and DRG, APC and APG methodology.
Thorough understanding of data quality’s effect on prospective payment and outpatient reimbursement.
Ability to use a computerized medical record abstract and encoder.
